The game is very much like Tiny Tower or No Zombies Allowed, in that you have to build various ‘rooms’ that supply, power, food, water, storage and relaxation to an ever growing population. Each inhabitant or ‘dweller’ has a set of seven special stats from strength to luck. Different attributes are suited to different rooms. Strong dwellers work best in the power stations, whereas the more intelligent characters are happier in the medical or scientific rooms. If ‘dwellers’ are placed in the bedrooms, they have a chance of procreation and if dwellers work in rooms that match their stats they become happier and raise the moral of the whole shelter. Later rooms aim to improve the special stats and you are able to send people to the bar to improve their charisma, get them on a treadmill to increase their endurance or even have them play cards to improve their luck.

I have spent the last three weeks constantly playing this game and I love it. At a recent count, I had nearly 130 dwellers all in custom outfits carrying some serious weaponry. New clothes and weapons can be gathered by sending some people out into the wasteland for hours at a time, or by opening special lunch boxes. Every lunch box has a set of cards that range from additional caps (money) to bespoke dwellers. You are awarded lunch boxes for achieving various tasks, such as gathering resources or sending people outside. Lunch boxes are also given out for playing everyday for a week and should you get in trouble, you can buy them as in-app purchases. I found myself spending nearly £10 on lunch boxes after a series of failed ‘rush’ events, when I tried to force my dwellers to create more resources. The ensuing ‘bug attack’ and fires soon killed many of my dwellers and in a panic I bought my way out of it.

Despite, my loss of self control in the finance department, I don’t consider it a waste of money, considering how many hours I have put into the game. I would like to see the game extended in future updates and have the addition of more rooms, mutants, robots and all of the other things that make the Fallout universe so eclectic.

If you are a fan of the Fallout series or just enjoy persistent games such as the Tiny Tower or ‘sims’, this is a great game that will keep you going back again and again. After three weeks, I realised I was getting addicted when I found myself checking it many times a day and even starting a new vault, so I could test how flexible the in-breading rules were. Before I was consumed by the darkness of my own personality, I decided to ceremonially send all 127 dwellers out into the wastelands, to find their own destiny. As I sat watching the lights slowly turn off in my 12 storey underground bunker I almost shed a tear.

Lego Bionicle brings together much-loved children’s toys and screen-based violence in a way that’s (honestly) tame enough for kids to enjoy. Pick a Lego Hero and follow the epic storyline as you search for the Mask Of Creation. Great graphics!

Oceanhorn

iOS users who want an epic game to get through winter should look at Oceanhorn; it’s been out since 2013, but a recent update improves the superb graphics even more. Guide the young hero to manhood via a sweeping adventure across uncharted waters. (iOS only.)

Smuggle Truck

Android users who want to make their iOS buddies jealous have a more difficult job, but Smuggle Truck is one gaming option, intended as a satire on the US’s immigration policy. Can you get your passengers safely over the border? (Android only.)

RockPlayer 2

A decent video player app is a good way to pass the dark evenings. RockPlayer 2 supports most audio and video formats and has an innovative interface with multiple gesture controls.

Hearthstone

Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft will take you away from it all to a goblin-filled universe. Collect and trade cards with this free app that’s beautifully designed.

AccuWeather

Finally, here’s an app to keep track of the approach of springtime. AccuWeather uses millions of European and North American data points to provide forecasts that can update minute by minute, as well as long range predictions. Alerts for severe conditions are also provided. Not perfect – but good luck finding a weather app that is!

In AFDL you play Officer Robert Campbell, aka Vengeance, an armour suited, super soldier trying to keep the peace in a world collapsing into the zombie apocalypse.

The game is reminiscent of Halo: Spartan Assault with a sprinklings of Resident Evil. It balances frantic twin stick zombie shooting action in a psuedo-top down viewpoint with an array of different puzzle elements. One minute you will be cutting your way through an onslaught of charging zombies with your assault rifle and the next you are playing a memory game with a psychotic Prison Director.

The game has a decent budget with scripted ‘in-engine’ cutscenes and passable voice work but it would benefit from some final polish. This action packed shooter works hard to cram in as many options as possible. A swipe control is used to change weapons and sporadic shop keepers offer a slew of different weapon types and upgrades. All of which are a little too expensive to get on a ‘free’ play through. A jump button creates some verticality and allows the protagonist to navigate over small obstructions and access higher levels. The melee button comes in very handy when swamped by the undead and become invaluable when reloading. Finally, the gadgets functionality means you can drop mines, release drones and throw smoke bombs. This mass of options does make you feel like you are getting a lot of game for your money, and it is pretty cool to have a drone fly around the screen taking out your enemies. However, all of these buttons do make the GUI a touch overcrowded and if you have fat fingers you might press shoot, melee and jump at the same time (on my iPhone 6, not on iPad).

The story moves along at a fast pace with twists and turns throughout introducing additional characters such as the sword wielding ninja and a maniacal scientist.

Overall, the game deserves its ‘app store’ featured status as it looks great and has responsive controls. The game feels cinematic, with an engaging narrative despite some dodgy voice acting. The gadgets are a exciting addition and there is plenty of game to keep to busy. The additional weapons and upgrades are a bit on the pricey side and many will not want to spend more than a couple of dollars on upgrades. However, the game is fun and congratulations has to go out to the team at Fedeen Games For translating this third-person twin stick shooter to mobile devices. It’s well worth a play.
