The Proliferation Of Apps

It appears that there is an application for anything and everything under the sun. We are implying about the kinds of apps that we can use on our mobile phones and portable computers. A bad worker will always blame his tools. Likewise, with the help of a right kind of app, you can propel your business to unforeseen heights. Mobile apps are gaining high prominence during these times because almost everyone has access to a compatible mobile phone. Long gone are the times when only the rich and the elite could afford mobile phones that could run various kinds of applications. Today you can find mobile phones that run various apps for cheap prices.

Why Small Business Owners Must Use Apps?

Small business owners are going to benefit a lot by using diverse kinds of apps. They need to conduct the various aspects of their business operations without relying on any other kinds of additional workforce to keep the associated costs to the minimum. It is needless to point out that apps have enabled small business owners to get things done in a faster and efficient manner. For instance, if you have confusion about the services that should already be present so that your business venture can start functioning in a smooth manner, it is better to concentrate on apps such as Zapier. Almost anyone and everyone will find immense use with applications such as these.

Some Apps To Help You

Call Loop is another app that many small business owners like. It will help them to keep in touch with their business confederates with ease. This is just a mobile messaging platform that you will have diverse uses in the short-term manner until a full-fledged communication systems are in place. Those who are running an e-commerce website will be interested in the next app that we are about to discuss. Google Wallet is a handy little application that presents the users with a very quick and efficient checkout process. It is easy to integrate the same into your existing small business operations. Online retail stores are paying great attention to applications such as these.

Are you planning an event for promoting your small business venture? Hiring in a dedicated event management team is out of the question because of the large amounts they ask as payment for their services. It turns out that you need not have to rely on dedicated personnel to help you design and conduct the event. Use Eventbrite for occasions such as these. Many small business owners love to find out more about their services from the existing clients. The establishments that experience lots of foot traffic can rely on apps such as On spot. This lovely app is a staple for my 18 month old daughter. The little tales compendium contains the following classic stories:

  • Snow White and the seven dwarfs
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • Goldilocks an the three bears
  • The Princess and the Frog
  • The princess and the Pea

You can test the water by downloading it for free but the adverts do get in the way and it will soon get annoying when your child keeps pressing it so I do recommend going for the paid option.

The graphics are sweet and simple and there is plenty for your son or daughter to tap. Some elements might bounce up and down, other switch entirely but each have instantly appealing sound effects. The female story teller is clear and crisp you can choose to have her read or read yourself (my daughter prefers the former).

The tales are long enough to entertain for about 5-10 each so if you find yourself in a queue or a waiting room, this is a great app to keep the little ones busy.

The stories themselves are generally pretty harmless but if you are strict about what they read then I would warn you that at the end of the little red riding hood tale the woodsmans cuts open the wolf and inside is grandma, safe and sound.

Sadly the app does still suggest other books you might want to download at the beginning but once your child figures out how to skip this then you are home free.

Overall this is a great app for little kids as its harmless, interactive and most importantly keeps them busy when you have things to do.

And to repeat the earlier point about adverts, you will have yourself a lot of hassle by getting the advert free version. Having you child constantly jumping to the app store gets very annoying very quickly.

We tend to focus on the gaming side of things here at AppTrawler, but some team members recently tried out an HTML5-based web app, Lucidchart, that impressed us with its flexibility and ease of use.

Lucidchart’s creators bill it as a one-stop solution for creating any diagram type–it’s essentially the online answer to Microsoft Visio.  Lucidchart will help you create wireframes, mockups, flowcharts, mind maps, and technical diagrams like UML & ER diagrams.

Since this app is built on open web standards, it runs incredibly well in modern browsers, especially Chrome.  You’ll have worse luck if you try running it on an outdated browser.  There’s nothing to install, and each account type has a free trial option, which is good for our risk-averse readers.

How it works

Lucidchart starts you off with an open grid-based canvas that’s easy to figure out.  Your shapes are on the left side, design options are on the right, and a ribbon at the top of your screen allows you to customize fonts, line fill, arrow type, etc.

The app has a whole range of shape libraries, which you can pull up by clicking the ‘More Shapes’ button in the bottom left corner.  The interface is drag-and-drop, with almost unlimited opportunities for customization.  For example, you can tweak fill color, arrow types, color gradient, line thickness–even the curviness of the line can be customized.  I found it quite easy to snap shapes and lines into place, although you do have to spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with the right-hand dock, where most of the design options are.

Real-time collaboration

Probably the best feature of Lucidchart is its real-time collaboration.  Since it’s cloud-based, multiple collaborators can hop on a document and work together in real-time, whether they’re on different continents or sitting at the same table.  Edits are synced instantly, which is a huge time-saver, and you no longer have to deal with multiple versions of the same document housed who-knows-where.  I can’t emphasize enough how this simplifies team projects, especially when it comes to bouncing ideas off of each other–an activity that usually requires another third-party service like Skype or Google Hangouts.  Another bonus of online diagramming is its accessibility–Lucidchart works on any browser, from any location, with any device.  Very convenient.

Sharing your docs

Obviously, you can maintain your diagrams in your docs list within Lucidchart.  But you can also share them to a variety of places, including popular image files (PNG, JPEG, PDF), a permanent online PDF link, blogs and wiki embeds, and so on.

Final verdict?  The experience of a online app is a little different from its desktop brethren, but we really enjoyed it.  Drawing was smooth and easy, and the collaboration features are top-notch.

If you’re still iffy about Lucidchart, try it yourself; they offer a free demo of the editor experience.  And let us know what you think!

Face it, Running Apps are everywhere.  Especially in January when New Years’ Resolutions are at the forefront of everyone’s minds.  Everyone wants to be healthier, lose weight, etc. etc.  After going through the masses of running apps we’ve found one that stands out from the crowd.  Sociercise Real Time Running Races on iPhone.  What we really like about this app is it is much more than the standard go for a run, track the distance, and share it with friends.  Sociercise actually lets you compete against other users in real time from around the world.

It was very motivating when I was testing this app that I was able to run against someone I’ve never met in a 5k race, virtually, in real time.  The sheer motivating power of “seeing” that person pass me made me run faster than I ever have.  It was great.  And I won!  There were also audio prompts that let me know if I slowed down or when I was close to the finish line, plus I could listen to my own music while I ran.

There are some other features of Sociercise Real Time Running Races that separate it out from the pack of other running apps in addition to the running races you can use Sociercise to do individual running workouts by yourself.  The Sociercise App also lets you see your route via Google Maps and everything is shareable with Facebook and Twitter.

Another great tool that this app solves is goal setting and tracking.  Many people have a calorie app and a running app.  With Sociercise you can track all of your goals and they show up in individual and combined percentages to let you know where you stand.

The user interface is simple but it works and works well.  Anyway, if you’re running you shouldn’t be caring so much about fancy graphics.  GPS functionality with this app is very accurate but as with other GPS apps it does take some battery power.  Before running I would suggest dimming the screen to save some battery life.

I run holding the app in my hand but other people might want to where an armband or put the iphone in their pocket.  If you do that you may not be able to see the graphical representation of the race but it won’t affect the functionality.

Overall, Sociercise Real Time Running Races is a top-rated running app that features real time running races, goal tracking, running log, and a user friendly interface.  Five Stars.
