The first game is titled Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. This game will be a Battle Royale action game set in the world of  Midgar before the events of Final Fantasy VII. As a soldier trainee, you will use your arsenal of magic and abilities in a fight for survival.

Below is a trailer for the upcoming action game that releases later in 2021. The game has that classic Final Fantasy aesthetic while also including the intensity and sheer randomness of modern Battle Royale games.

The other game that Square Enix announced was called Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, which is an episodic chapter-structured single-player experience that covers the entire timeline of the game, including the events of the original game and the compilation titles.

This “remake of a remake” is written by Final Fantasy VII Remake writer Kazushige Nojima. I have added a trailer below. Unusually, the graphics resemblances both the original PlayStation title from 1997 as well as the remake.

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is slated for release later in 2020, while Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is coming sometime in 2022. Both will be launched on iOS and Android as be free-to-play titles.

In December, the 2D deduction title racked up over 40 million downloads, giving Among Us a strong end to a very impressive year as it was the most downloaded mobile game of the year.

Similarly, the number of downloads was 36 times more than that of the same month in 2019. What’s interesting is that The US and Brazil accounted for the most installs with 17.5 percent and 9.3 percent, respectively.

November 2020 was a vital month for the game, as not only did Among Us excel 200 million downloads, but it also smashed 500 million monthly active users.

Finally, Among Us was given the title of Mobile Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020.

Runners Up

In second place last month was Join Clash 3D created by Supersonic. The game managed to pick up 29 million installs, with 39.7 percent of installs coming from India.

In third place was  Sushi Roll 3D by Say Games, closely followed by two Voodoo titles, Roof Rails and Shortcut Run sat at No.4 and No.5.

Overall, the French mobile games developer and publisher picked up two billion downloads across its entire portfolio in 2020.

The Golden Child

While it may not have cracked the top 10 overall, Riot Games’ League of Legends: Wild Rift did manage to creep up the App Store chart.

Having released at the tail end of last year, and being confirmed for iOS devices in October, Wild Rift managed to pick up almost 4 billion downloads in December 2020.

Moreover, the mobile MOBA has proven to be most popular in Vietnam, Turkey and Taiwan.

COD Mobile

In other news, Call of Duty: Mobile may not have entered the top five, but it did enjoy the No.7 spot overall after experiencing its best months for downloads since November 2019.

Over the Christmas period, the mobile shooter managed to generate almost 17 million downloads, which was surely helped by its successful launch in China. Supported by the fact that 60 percent of downloads came from the Chinese App Store.

Within its first week of launch in China, Call of Duty: Mobile grossed $14 million in revenue.

Overall, Activision’s mobile shooter has picked up 300 million downloads as of October 2020.

The mobile gaming world has come a long way in the past couple of decades. At the start of the millennium, phones were still considered new and exotic technology. Today, there are around 14 billion mobile devices worldwide. Wow.

However, while gaming via a smartphone has become popular and accessible globally, the industry is evolving rapidly. That’s why it’s worth an estimated $90 billion  in 2020. Again, wow.

The advent of e-readers has made it easier than ever to indulge in your favorite book wherever you go. If you’re a fan of colossal fantasy epics, it’s difficult to bring each installment with you. Still, with an e-reader, you can jump in and out all from a single device, and many modern e-readers, such as the Kindle Fire, can even support games and other apps just in case you finish faster than expected. 

Of course, not everyone is on board the e-book train, so the classic paper options are always possible if you prefer to physically turn the page. Just make sure they don’t take up too much space, especially at the expense of your road trip buddies’ things.

Write About The Adventure

If you’re not one for photography and find that all of the pictures you take are either blurry, poorly framed, or have a thumb covering half the lens, then writing about the adventure in a travel journal is another superb way to kill time on the road trip. 

The beauty of travel journaling is that you can do it wherever you have a pen and paper. You can follow the Kerouac route and transform it into a wild odyssey of adventure with fictionalized names but real people. You can use the more traditional travel writing approach and focus purely on your surroundings rather than the characters you are traveling alongside. 

Whichever method you choose, you can look back on it whenever you feel you’re missing your adventures and remind yourself that, although the journey was long, it was also immensely enjoyable. 

Weird Stops

Every highway has those weird and quirky stops that you must check out; otherwise, you’ll feel you’re missing something. They are usually found in the middle of nowhere, typically with a gaudy neon sign that flickers in the darkness and a lot of tacky statues or souvenirs standing outside. 

While stopping at these places won’t speed up your journey, it will give you the chance to stretch your legs and take a break, which is essential regardless of the journey’s length. This will make sure your driver can get refreshed, or you can swap over driving duties to give them a break. 

If you’ve got plenty of time to kill, you can even stop for a picnic or grab something from the diner down the road and talk about just how weird that place was. 

Flying By

The Pre Match Warm Up

It’s always good to get some practice in before the game, so when I am on the train traveling to the game I get a chance to play a few hands. Usually, I tend to play poker games online or use one of the many poker apps such as Party Poker, as found on the poker app guide site, however there are plenty to choose from, some use real money whereas other are just for fun.

As we start the game and reminisce about our previous wins, we start one of our ‘timer’ apps to keep track of the blinds, so we can all concentrate on the cards. Depending on whether we use my iPhone or Craig’s HTC our timers of choice are; Poker Timer by Birdsoft (for both iPad and iPhone) or the Ultimate Hold’em Timer for Android. Both have simple, minimal displays that allow you to get all the information you need from a simple glance.

Who Gets The Beers

Playing on a custom made poker table at Andy’s is a pretty cool experience, but playing in the Kitchen, a stones throw away from the fridge also has its advantages; namely, its close to the beer. When we are separated from our precious drinks we like to use an app to designate who will make the mammoth journey. For this we like to use Tea Round for the iPad. It might be themed around Tea but with its simple customization it is easily re-purposed.

Who’s Hungry

What better way to compliment beer and cards than with a few Pizzas. So when 10pm comes around we use the handy Dominos App to choose and order our pizzas without having to break the flow of the game.

Are You Taking Notes?

If like me you are constantly looking to up your game then you can take you poker playing to the next level by using taking notes on the other players. For this I recommend Poker Notes Live (for both IOS and Android). This free poker utility app is a useful tool that will help you remember the moves, style, patterns, and tells you notice about other players at your table. Very handy for the serious player and it can be used when playing online as well.

Win or lose we all have a fantastic time and eventually we will take our game to Las Vegas when Andy hits 40, where we hope to take part in one of many tournaments held at Caesars Palace. Can’t wait!

The game is very much like Tiny Tower or No Zombies Allowed, in that you have to build various ‘rooms’ that supply, power, food, water, storage and relaxation to an ever growing population. Each inhabitant or ‘dweller’ has a set of seven special stats from strength to luck. Different attributes are suited to different rooms. Strong dwellers work best in the power stations, whereas the more intelligent characters are happier in the medical or scientific rooms. If ‘dwellers’ are placed in the bedrooms, they have a chance of procreation and if dwellers work in rooms that match their stats they become happier and raise the moral of the whole shelter. Later rooms aim to improve the special stats and you are able to send people to the bar to improve their charisma, get them on a treadmill to increase their endurance or even have them play cards to improve their luck.

I have spent the last three weeks constantly playing this game and I love it. At a recent count, I had nearly 130 dwellers all in custom outfits carrying some serious weaponry. New clothes and weapons can be gathered by sending some people out into the wasteland for hours at a time, or by opening special lunch boxes. Every lunch box has a set of cards that range from additional caps (money) to bespoke dwellers. You are awarded lunch boxes for achieving various tasks, such as gathering resources or sending people outside. Lunch boxes are also given out for playing everyday for a week and should you get in trouble, you can buy them as in-app purchases. I found myself spending nearly £10 on lunch boxes after a series of failed ‘rush’ events, when I tried to force my dwellers to create more resources. The ensuing ‘bug attack’ and fires soon killed many of my dwellers and in a panic I bought my way out of it.

Despite, my loss of self control in the finance department, I don’t consider it a waste of money, considering how many hours I have put into the game. I would like to see the game extended in future updates and have the addition of more rooms, mutants, robots and all of the other things that make the Fallout universe so eclectic.

If you are a fan of the Fallout series or just enjoy persistent games such as the Tiny Tower or ‘sims’, this is a great game that will keep you going back again and again. After three weeks, I realised I was getting addicted when I found myself checking it many times a day and even starting a new vault, so I could test how flexible the in-breading rules were. Before I was consumed by the darkness of my own personality, I decided to ceremonially send all 127 dwellers out into the wastelands, to find their own destiny. As I sat watching the lights slowly turn off in my 12 storey underground bunker I almost shed a tear.

It was down to London-based operator Gamesys to step up to the mark, and in 2012 it launched the Bingo Friendzy app, dubbed “the world’s first real cash game on Facebook.” The app was restricted to users aged over 18 and was extremely well-received by Facebook’s gaming communities.

Fast forward three years, and another of Gamesys’ brands, Jackpotjoy, has re-launched its bingo app for Facebook, using a £25 starter bonus for new players. Version 2.0.0 will feature the Aztec-themed Fortune Temple slots game, as well as a 20 line slot, Double Bubble, which promises players bonuses of up to £80,000.

While game variety has increased, the technical aspects have also improved, with far fewer bugs and general better app stability, making it far more accessible to the ever-increasing smartphone market.

Gamesys operates its gambling activities by having them regulated and licensed by the government of Gibraltar. In AFDL you play Officer Robert Campbell, aka Vengeance, an armour suited, super soldier trying to keep the peace in a world collapsing into the zombie apocalypse.

The game is reminiscent of Halo: Spartan Assault with a sprinklings of Resident Evil. It balances frantic twin stick zombie shooting action in a psuedo-top down viewpoint with an array of different puzzle elements. One minute you will be cutting your way through an onslaught of charging zombies with your assault rifle and the next you are playing a memory game with a psychotic Prison Director.

The game has a decent budget with scripted ‘in-engine’ cutscenes and passable voice work but it would benefit from some final polish. This action packed shooter works hard to cram in as many options as possible. A swipe control is used to change weapons and sporadic shop keepers offer a slew of different weapon types and upgrades. All of which are a little too expensive to get on a ‘free’ play through. A jump button creates some verticality and allows the protagonist to navigate over small obstructions and access higher levels. The melee button comes in very handy when swamped by the undead and become invaluable when reloading. Finally, the gadgets functionality means you can drop mines, release drones and throw smoke bombs. This mass of options does make you feel like you are getting a lot of game for your money, and it is pretty cool to have a drone fly around the screen taking out your enemies. However, all of these buttons do make the GUI a touch overcrowded and if you have fat fingers you might press shoot, melee and jump at the same time (on my iPhone 6, not on iPad).

The story moves along at a fast pace with twists and turns throughout introducing additional characters such as the sword wielding ninja and a maniacal scientist.

Overall, the game deserves its ‘app store’ featured status as it looks great and has responsive controls. The game feels cinematic, with an engaging narrative despite some dodgy voice acting. The gadgets are a exciting addition and there is plenty of game to keep to busy. The additional weapons and upgrades are a bit on the pricey side and many will not want to spend more than a couple of dollars on upgrades. However, the game is fun and congratulations has to go out to the team at Fedeen Games For translating this third-person twin stick shooter to mobile devices. It’s well worth a play.
