Yes, there’s another farm game on the iPhone. Luckily, Tap Farm is the closest thing to Farmville you can currently get – that is unless Zynga decides to have a foray into the mobile world. It’s almost a complete clone.

For that reason it’s actually quite good, and should you crave some crop-planting action whilst on the bus, Tap Farm should fit the bill nicely.

In true farming game fashion, you start off with a few gold coins that you have to invest into crops. In real time your crops will grow, and once they’re ready you can then sell them for more coinage. And don’t worry: the real time system means you don’t need to have your phone on for your seedlings to grow.

As you might expect, your riches can be used to buy trees, livestock, and more crops. As you continue to harvest your level increases, thus unlocking yet more items to use on your land.

The most notable difference between Farmville and Tap Farm is the actual system for running your farm. Instead of tapping and clicking, you drag and drop. Quite how that works out we aren’t sure.

Tap Farm is available free on the App Store now, should you still yearn for a bit of the good life.

Eidos Interactive and Dynamo Games have combined again to create Championship Manager 2010 for iPhone, which is out now on the App Store.

Last season’s effort, Championship Manager 2009, didn’t live up to most people’s expectations – largely because it was a conversion of the Symbian release.

As any football manager will tell you when taking on a new job, progress often requires a complete rebuild of the team.

Dynamo has adopted just such a philosophy for the 2010 edition, creating a bespoke iPhone footy management experience. As such, the games had a total revamp, with an improved 2D match engine and detailed press conferences.

You’ll also be able to play alongside real-life managers in CM Season Live, though it appears you’ll need a copy of the CM 2010 PC game to make use of this online functionality.

We’ve also been assured that update packs will be released throughout the season to reflect real-world player movements.champ-manager-2

Last weekend we took a look at a preview release of React GamesArchon Conquest and, as fans of the 25 year old EA original, we liked what we saw.  The game has since gone live in the App Store [link] and we’ve spent a bit more time with this variation on the studio’s remake of the chess-like action strategy game.

archon conquest review screenBack in June, React brought a revamped take on EA’s 1983 classic Archon [App Store] to the iPhone. Archon is an action / strategy game set on a 9×9 chess-like board arrayed with a variety of Light and Dark game pieces, each with its own set of battle attributes.  When two pieces come face-to-face on the same board square, action turns to the battle arena where the enemies do battle, arcade style.  The winner takes the square.

Archon Conquest stays close to the original formula, but in place of the chess board setting is a variety of different environments in which to play — four maps or campaigns with 60 different quests or puzzles to complete in all.  As mentioned in our preview, Archon Conquest looks visually closer to EA’s 1984 sequel, Archon II: Adpet, but the similarity ends there.  It’s still a matter of controlling power squares or wiping out the enemy wholesale, but in new, obstacle-laden environments.

Archon Conquest map 2Archon Conquest allows the player to earn medals on each quest, depending on overall success and tracks skill through (Plus+) online leaderboards.  Power characters can cast spells, including new spells as compared to the original, and characters can level up and collect various power-ups in the combat arena.

The differing available characters through the game’s various quests, along with the need to negotiate the new board environments, mixes the game up tangibly from the more ordered gameplay of the original.  It feels very much like the new take on Archon that it is, and as a big fan of the original, I find it pleasantly refreshing.  There’s definitely more long-term playability here than in the classic title. In fact, the full play time is estimated at 16 hours to complete all four maps.

[ Full HD version | Low Bandwidth version ]

Those familiar and fond of the original should find the variety that Archon Conquest brings a welcome twist on a solid formula.  And, thanks to the variation that the game brings (not to mention a lower cost of entry), those who’ve never commanded the Light or the Dark before might just find React’s latest to be more appealing than classic Archon.

Wherever you fall, if a well-balanced fusion of action and strategy sounds appealing, you’d do well to give Archon Conquest a try.

Pocket God is one of the most influential apps to appear on the iPhone, and has proven very tricky for us to quantify here at Pocket Gamer. Strictly, it’s not a game, but the episodic life of those poor pygmies has provided more entertainment than many of the more traditional games out there.

And now is seems the iPhone is going to hell as developer Eyedip balances out the virtual universe with Pocket Devil, an ‘after’ life simulator in which you take charge of purgatory and its many horned minions.

In a similar vein, Pocket Devil is an episodic game, with the first chapter, Burn Baby Burn, having just gone on sale. Here you get to grips with your arcane powers, and either push your followers into eternal suffering or everlasting peace.

It’s a pretty blatant clone, but the popularity of Pocket God suggests a need for a bit of deistic competition to keep the universe in balance, so hit the ‘Buy It!’ button to go to hell and check out Pocket Devil.
