This morning Crescent Moon Games, creators of Ravensword: The Fallen King [$4.99] just pulled the curtain from their upcoming space-themed 3D / 2.5D platform game, Ultra Kid: Mystery of the Mutants.

Inspired by fantastic games like MegaMan, Kid Icarus, and Super Mario Galaxy and others, Ultra Kid will have players flying their rockets through space to land on different moons and planets, where they will find crazy creatures to fight and dark tunnels to explore.

With a mixture of both 2.5D and 3D platforming, you’ll collect weapons and suit upgrades as you progress through the game to help you complete your main mission of saving the galaxy from Dr. Ridalin, who we’ve been assured is quite evil. Ultra Kid is still in development, and while details are vague right now, we expect to learn quite a bit more about the game in the upcoming weeks.

Jonathan Lanis has recently contributed a simple and fun bit of 3D obstacle-dodging tunnel madness to the App Store in the form of Boost 3D

Boost 3D is about tunnels, and it’s a rather simple affair.  You start out racing down the inside of an obstacle-laden tunnel and, before you know it, you’re racing down the outside of an obstacle-laden tunnel, tilting left and right, trying to keep from careening into varying arrangements of colorful blocks.  There are boost pads that lend speed to your travel, as well as granting the ability to crash through an obstacle.  Granted, it sounds pretty same-old, same-old — I mean, there’re plenty of hurtle-down-a-tunnel games in the App Store — but somehow, Boost 3D stands above the pack.  It has a certain stylized, simple charm that makes it feel unique.  Not to mention the glass-smooth framerate.

That said, it could be more of a game.  You start down the tunnel, racking up points the further you go.  The track and obstacles change along the way, but it’s a one-shot run.  I think the addition of end goals and levelling would add significantly to the game.  But, still, among the iPhone tunnel games, Boost 3D is king, or close to the same.  It’s genuinely hard to put down.

See the developer’s gameplay video, which is silent, unlike the game.

3D Tunnel may have been better suited with a catchier name and a background premise.  For example, calling the app “Wormhole” and having the spaceship trapped in a wormhole trying to find the way out work be easier to market (unless there is already another app named Wormhole).

Game play is pretty simple.  You tilt the device to the right or left or up or down in order to move the spaceship in that direction.  If you touch the sides of the tunnel, you explode and thus lose the game.  There are options to adjust the sensitivity of tilting the device as well as flipping the x-axis and sound.

The game is a good idea and very simple to use.  There are one or two improvements that could be made to make it better.

First, the spaceship design looks simplistic and amateur.  This conflicts with the tunnel efffect which looks kind of cool.  This is where a good graphic designer would come in handy.

Second, when I play the game I’m usually not holding it parallel to my face.  I’m holding it downwards at an angle, and although i can flip the axis, it still was a little difficult to handle the controls (even with the sensitivity setting in the options menu set to low).

The game is a little pricey for what it offers.  I would pay $.99 for this one, but not $2.99.  I’d wait for a decrease in price before purchase.

Quick Take

Value: Decent
Would I Buy Again: Possibly, if the cost was $.99.
Learning Curve: Low.
Who Is It For: Flight simulator fans.
What I Like: The game itself.  The tunnel graphics.
What I Don’t: The spaceship design.  The inability to set a custom angle to play.  The price.

Final Statement: Would be worth it at a lower price.
