InnerSloth’s handheld hit Among Us enjoyed another month as the most downloaded title in December 2020, (Source: Sensor Tower.)

In December, the 2D deduction title racked up over 40 million downloads, giving Among Us a strong end to a very impressive year as it was the most downloaded mobile game of the year.

Similarly, the number of downloads was 36 times more than that of the same month in 2019. What’s interesting is that The US and Brazil accounted for the most installs with 17.5 percent and 9.3 percent, respectively.

November 2020 was a vital month for the game, as not only did Among Us excel 200 million downloads, but it also smashed 500 million monthly active users.

Finally, Among Us was given the title of Mobile Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020.

Runners Up

In second place last month was Join Clash 3D created by Supersonic. The game managed to pick up 29 million installs, with 39.7 percent of installs coming from India.

In third place was  Sushi Roll 3D by Say Games, closely followed by two Voodoo titles, Roof Rails and Shortcut Run sat at No.4 and No.5.

Overall, the French mobile games developer and publisher picked up two billion downloads across its entire portfolio in 2020.

wild-rift

The Golden Child

While it may not have cracked the top 10 overall, Riot Games’ League of Legends: Wild Rift did manage to creep up the App Store chart.

Having released at the tail end of last year, and being confirmed for iOS devices in October, Wild Rift managed to pick up almost 4 billion downloads in December 2020.

Moreover, the mobile MOBA has proven to be most popular in Vietnam, Turkey and Taiwan.

League of Legends: Wild Rift is so much that we recommend it if you are looking for something new.

COD Mobile

In other news, Call of Duty: Mobile may not have entered the top five, but it did enjoy the No.7 spot overall after experiencing its best months for downloads since November 2019.

Over the Christmas period, the mobile shooter managed to generate almost 17 million downloads, which was surely helped by its successful launch in China. Supported by the fact that 60 percent of downloads came from the Chinese App Store.

Within its first week of launch in China, Call of Duty: Mobile grossed $14 million in revenue.

Overall, Activision’s mobile shooter has picked up 300 million downloads as of October 2020.

In today’s contemporary economy it is crucial for project heads to make sure everyone is on the same page.  Given how many contemporary projects are cobbled together from various sources these days it can be difficult to organize a process through texts, phone calls, and periodic emails, and then relaying these new developments to others involved.  While there is a lot of collaborative software available, most of it requires a desktop, and is not nearly as flexible as is needed these days.  As a small business coordinating with many agents in the field it was imperative for us to find a technological solution to these issues.  When we discovered Trello it was the end of all our worries.

Trello organizes itself through a series of ‘boards’, there is no limit on boards (that we have found anyways), and they essentially can be used to separate projects.  Once a board has been created, it again opens to a blank workspace where the user can begin to create the tasks which a project requires.  This is the point at which Trello becomes the most useful to the user.  When creating a card the user can insert all the relevant data in a myriad of forms.  There is room for notes, of course, but there are also ways of adding due dates, checklists, color coded ads, polls, and even attach and exchange files.  Once a card is created to a users liking, you can begin to invite other Trello users to participate in that card, and to a degree that board.  Although, users will only see the cards on a board they have been granted (and accepted) permission to see.

Trello updates in real time and keeps an archive of completed tasks in case you wish to review past information on a project.  As the logistics head of a Buffalo, NY dumpster rental company we use Trello to keep real time tabs on our dumpster locations, current billing cycles, and to help monitor deadlines for the upcoming construction of a recycling center.  The ease of use of the app has proven particularly helpful to our agents in the field.  Simplistic, private, and free, there is little more you demand of an app providing the services you need.  As such it is easy to rate the Trello app very highly.

The Secret of Grisly Manor has finally upon us. Apptrawler has been aware of this game for more many months now and it’s lush teaser graphics has kept us on tenterhooks.  Created by Fire Maple Games, the company who brought us the quirky physics puzzlers Danger Cats and Stunt Squirrels this classic adventure game is in the style of the old game ‘Myst’.  The game uses beautifully crafted static images jammed packed full of pick ups and clues to help you find your missing grandfather.

the-secret-of-grisly-manor_1the-secret-of-grisly-manor_3

There are a great selection of places to visit and a plethora of puzzles to rack the mind and keep you entertained.   Some of the puzzles you might get quite easily, whereas others might have you looking online for the answer (it’s not cheating!) but each is enough to keep your attention and make you play through the game.

The graphics are lovely to look at and whilst they could have more animation to lift them a little it does not detract from the game as each screen immerses you if the weird world of your eccentric grandfather.  The sounds are suitably atmospheric and give the whole a ‘eerie’ feel.

Once criticism would be that it feels a little short as we got through it relatively quickly (with a little help of the net) and would love to see it go further in the story department as there was a loads of puzzles to keep us going.  However, if the sign of a great game is to leave you wanting more then Fire Maple has achieved it as we can’t wait for the sequel.

Sorry readers for the huge gap since our last review, it’s been all go at this end with new jobs, and even new babies!! (big congrats to Foyble on that one!)

DF_img01

Well we’re back and what better way to come back than a ‘First Play’ preview of the new top down shooter Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest.  Dragon Fire is a bright, fun and strange top down shooter reminiscent of ‘Pop n Twin Bee’ and ‘Parodius’ where you play Una, a small red Dragon who’s aim is to bring peace back to the land by shooting everything that moves.  The auto fire constantly shoots and you use an onscreen D-pad (or optional joystick) to control the player.  Power ups include Phoenix wing men, winged health fairy and power up coins which allows you to grow extra heads increasing your firepower.

The graphics are bright, colourful and imaginative as you will be shooting all sorts of ‘weird and wonderful’ creatures including flying pigs, minotaurs, griffen types creatures and a whole lot more.  The 14 levels each have 7 end of stage bosses which are REALLY weird such as rocket launcher hog, a spitting camel on a lilo and a strange lava Mexican throwing chilli’s at you… very odd… but at the end of each level you have to face down the dragon guardians.

DF_img02

The gameplay is good and the dragons moves well but there are a few times when it feels a little sparce and its hard to know how much health you have when you are bombarded by enemy bullets all the time.  The music and sound effects fit well and have a epic feel to them giving a relatively slow game an bit more excitement.  The levels don’t change so memorizing them and attempting to kill anything that moves is your best bet to completing it but we still found ourselves going back over the previous levels in order to collect the all important stars as these unlock three mini games.

We were only able to unlock two of the games at the time of writing which all seem to be pig related (weird i know).  The first is a plinko game in which you drop coins down a pin board to get them into a moving piggy bank at the bottom.  Its pretty simplistic but it has two game modes which is great for a quick game/distraction.  The second game we managed to unlock was a platform game like ‘Cliffed’ where you have to get a pig down a tower whilst a spikey bar drops from the ceiling… very fun, but quite hard.  The final game looks to be a tap game but as you needed 5000 stars to unlock we don’t see ourselves unlocking that for a while.

DF_img03

This is a great shooter with a retro feel which took us back to the top down shooters of the neo geo. You can tell its from an individual developer and not a proper software house but this is better than a lot of the apps out there. The build we had did have a couple of bugs which were some gaps in the background and a couple of colour inconsistencies but we hope the final build will have these sorted.  Overall, Dragon Fire is great fun, with creative enemies, colourful graphics and some interesting replay options. Coupled with epic music and plenty of options this is a refreshing game which is well worth a look.

We get asked to look at a lot of doodle games at Apptrawler and many we have to say no to due to the sheer amount of games out there to look at.  But whilst playing around with our iPad yesterday we got the code for Doodle Bomb HD and we thought we’d give it a go.

1-sm

Doodle Bomb HD is a new game from AppChogie. What you have to do is defuse all the bombs before the fuses run out and blow all the bombs, sounds simple! However this is not as simple as it looks as the speed of the game is fast paced so a slight distraction can cause all havoc to break loose. The bombs are spinning in all kinds of directions each with a 3 second fuse so it takes a fast finger to get them all.

2-sm

This game isn’t going to win any awards for depth, but it makes up for in simple addictiveness.  We passed it about the office expecting to delete it moments later but we found it had a strange power over us and the minutes turned into hours.

The graphics are what you expect from a doodle game and it has a bouncy little tune to keep you amused.  There are no online leader boards so the scores are all local but if you are after a bit of fun to pass the time or even play with you kids this is an easy to grasp but hard to master game that you can pick up and play when you want to leave the world behind you.

This review will explode in 3 second…     …   …

When we first saw Office Heroes, I admit I was more than a little surprised with the overwhelmingly positive response the game saw both in article comments and on our forums. It seems that social gaming is a guilty pleasure for many, and as I mentioned in the preview, Office Heroes has an incredibly clever premise in that you’re wasting your virtual life away inside of an office as you’re wasting your real life away sinking your time in to the game.

In Office Heroes, you have an incredibly customizable avatar who lives inside of a (initially) tiny virtual office. Gameplay is identical to similar social games in that you’re managing in-game resources that are both generated by completing tasks in games with others that are gained via an in-app purchase. As you level up and get more friends, you unlock more decorations for your office and various gizmos to waste your avatar’s time on. Absolutely nothing you do to earn money in game is productive in any way. For instance, you buy your little dude a computer and he uses it to tweet, or you can get him a phone to make personal phone calls, along with tons of other activities with other office items.

There’s not much sense in really “reviewing” a game like this as it’s free and you either love these kind of social games or hate them. Office Heroes doesn’t do anything other games haven’t done before, but it’s still incredibly refreshing to play a social game that actually has an original premise. So many of them on the App Store do little more than pick a popular Zynga game and duplicate it, so it’s nice to see Astro Ape Studios releasing something that doesn’t have to do with tending fields.

The original Predator movie back in 1987 sparked a huge cult following and a subsequent movie and various crossovers with Aliens. Acclaimed producer Robert Rodriguez is set to rekindle that flame on the big-screen with a stand-alone movie, Predators, with Chillingo and Angry Mob Games stepping up for the mandatory small-screen game tie-in.

predators1

Like Guerilla Bob (Angry Mob’s last project), Predators is a dual-stick shooter, though distinguishing itself with a unique focus on melee combat to satiate that staple Predator action. Where would Predator be without the wicked arsenal that we all know and love? Angry Mob Games has taken heed and supplemented the melee combat with his many useful longer-range attacks (such as the Plasma Cannon and Disc Weapon) and sensory abilities too.

predators2

These all come together in arena-like combat scenarios– 24 of them to be exact– where you are tasked with dispatching the supple human prey wandering into your predatory habitat. To begin with, your Predator has only the use of his claws, which are single target shredding machines, and only a single combo. The first few levels operate as an introduction sequence to familiarise yourself with the 6 melee combos at your disposal. Subsequent levels gradually unlock weapons and abilities that are all required to continue.

The Predator’s arsenal provides both the objectives and context for the game’s missions. Some missions require you to use your cloaking device to eliminate enemies undetected; others require you to use your thermal detection to take out sniping enemies. Others again require you to perform particular melee kills, or collect trophy scalps with the trophy kill combo after netting your prey. No matter the task at hand, the Predator swiss-army-knife has a tool to tackle it head-on and with deadly force; and it’s great to see an effort has been made to make each weapon and ability useful.

predators3

Eventually, you are introduced to the overall targets of your bloody alien party; 8 warriors from Earth deemed worthy of being honorable Predator prey. These act as boss levels, which are unfortunately a low point in the game’s missions– requiring you to monotonously kill a large number of cannon fodder humans to flush them out– and then killing them when they do. Each of these targets has a unique ability to make your job all the more difficult. In subsequent levels they reappear as standard enemies, the end result being that the final levels are replete with enemies sporting machine guns, samurai swords and sniper rifles are all trying to take you down first, adding considerably to the difficulty.

The on-screen controls are adequate to the task, with the dual-stick mechanics functioning as well as we’ve seen so far. Weapons are switched with on-screen buttons, and your limited energy bar (responsible for powering most of your weapons and armor abilities) is represented in the top left corner. Melee combat is where the controls really stand out however, with an A and B button activating a number of different combos and attacks. Pressing B while running for example, will cause your Predator to leap attack; a subsequent B will cause him to Impale your enemy, and another 3 A attacks will initiate the Trophy kill to brutally sever their head. It may sound difficult on paper, but combos and attacks are fluid and easily executed and look absolutely gut-wrenching– pun intended!

On the flipside, the levels themselves in Predators attract our largest criticism. The jungle level at first appears lush and detailed, and though not overly large, suffices for the cloak and dagger gameplay required of the Predator. It is still a glorified square arena however, with clearly delineated boundaries containing what is essentially an open area somewhat reminescent of Minigore. And as in that game, the level does not change at all mission-to-mission. It’s a real shame that one of the strengths of Guerilla Bob– its varied level design– couldn’t be employed by the developers here as well.

The only other issue we had is that the game does suffer from a few minor bugs and graphical glitches that may hamper the occasional combo attack. Predators is also a little light on content, offering only a single difficulty level able to be played through in a couple of hours. Fortunately, the last level to be unlocked also doubles as an endless Survival Mode, in what will undoubtedly be the bread and butter for competitive types.

Throughout the levels, the more difficult kills are awarded with a greater honor bonus, a points system used to upgrade your unlocked weapons. In its current implementation though, honor points seem a little superfluous as we earned far more points than we could spend on a simple run through, and never had to work towards our upgrades. In any case, Chillingo’s Crystal platform is used to record these scores online and to provide a set of achievements for completionists to tackle.

Predators is a faithful rendition of the source material, checking off all the gory boxes to satisfy even the headiest of cult followers. More importantly however, Predators successfully combines fun melee combat, light stealth gameplay and missions acutely based on the Predator arsenal to offer a different and engaging Predator gameplay experience on the iOS device. We only hope that future DLC can introduce more interesting level designs and additional missions to flesh out the existing content.

A couple weeks ago we first caught wind of Archetype, an online first person shooter by iPhone developer MunkyFun which is comprised of veterans of LucasArts and the creators of both Shift [99¢] and Ivory Tiles [99¢] for the iPhone. Much like ngmoco’s Eliminate [Free], Archetype is said to work over WiFi, 3G, and also EDGE connections. Players will rank up as they play, earning experience and winning medals along the way.

archetype4_ip4

archetype3_ip4

The main differentiator between Archetype and other similar online shooters is that Archetype will be playable with up to ten players at once, in teams of five, with an assortment of six different weapons to choose from. We’re anxious to see how the game works, and likely won’t have to wait too long as per the Archetype web site the game is launching in “early July” for $2.99.

archetype5_ip4-525x350

For more information on the game, including a few hands-on impressions from a few people who managed to snag the game early, check out the thread in our forums. I’m not entirely sure how MunkyFun is going to be able to provide a solid 5v5 first person shooter experience that will even play well over EDGE, but needless to say we’re going to be keeping a very close eye on this game to give it a try once its released.

It’s no secret we love Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor [$2.99 for the iPhone. While Tiger Style Games is hard at work building whatever their successor to Spider will be, they’ve also had time to crank out the free Spider: Hornet Smash [Free], and Spider: Bryce Manor HD for the iPad which they’re hoping to submit to the App Store very soon.

spider1

Like similar HD releases, Spider HD is little more than the iPhone game with the resolution of everything cranked up to fill the screen of the iPad. This allows you to see much more of your surroundings, making clues regarding the secrets of Bryce Manor much easier to spot than on the iPhone version, where your somewhat limited viewpoint could result in missing certain things if you weren’t properly exploring some levels. Also, like most games built around fantastic art, the entire game experience is so much better in high resolution.

All four of the game modes from the iPhone game are included, as well as a brand new two player “sidekicks” game mode where two spiders are on screen, and each spider is controlled by the finger nearest to it. It’s actually a surprising amount of fun, as like most games played in cooperative mode it’s entirely up to you whether you want to help each other build webs, or simply race all over the screen trying to munch up bugs before the other player. Tiger Style is still working on how sidekick mode is going to be scored, so we’ll have to wait and see whether or not they encourage cooperative, competitive, or both types of play style in the two player mode.

Here’s a brief video demonstrating how it works, but since shooting iPad video is such a hassle my second player is actually playing the role of the camera man so in this case, yes, I am playing a two player game by myself:

As mentioned, Tiger Style hopes to submit Spider: Bryce Manor HD this weekend which means unless there are any significant bugs or approval issues we should be playing Spider on our iPads early this month. When asked about whether or not Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor for the iPhone was going to see an update to support the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, they said that they don’t have plans yet, but mostly because they just have yet to get their hands on an iPhone 4. Either way, here’s to hoping for a quick approval of Spider HD, and some high-definition love for the iPhone Spider in the not too distant future.

Per a recent posting on the Myst forums, Myst [$4.99 / Free] just had an update submitted to Apple to add iOS 4 compatibility. Interestingly enough, also mentioned in the same thread by Cyan employee Chogon is the fact that yet another Cyan classic is coming to the App Store: The Manhole.

The Manhole is a children’s adventure game written by Rand and Robyn Miller, founders of Cyan (and creators of Myst). It was developed for the early Macintosh using Apple’s HyperCard, one of the first available hypermedia authoring systems. The game was Cyan’s first release and was published on floppy disk in 1988. In The Manhole, you open a manhole revealing a giant beanstalk which can either be climbed up or down with no real objective other than to simply explore the game world and have fun. The Manhole has since been re-released in a number of forms on various platforms, including Brøderbund’s 1995 re-release, The Manhole: CD-ROM Masterpiece Edition, and its release on GameTap in 2007. According to Cyan, the graphics in the iPhone version of The Manhole have been enhanced even further than the Masterpiece Edition.

manhole2

Per Chogon’s post on the Myst forums, The Manhole was submitted on June 30th, so barring any issues it should hopefully appear on the App Store sometime next week. While I’m sure quite a few people have never heard of The Manhole before, I expect this announcement will be a delightful blast from the past for some.

The original Missile Command was released to arcades in 1980, and aside from being played by John Connor in Terminator 2, Missile Command has provided a solid core gameplay element which has been either the direct inspiration of evolved upon in far too many video games than I could even attempt to list– Also, it just so happens that this gameplay mechanic works fantastic with the touchscreen of iOS devices, which explains why so many developers are eager to take their shot at a Missile Defense inspired game.

EarthDefender_Screen_5

Fishlabs, the guys behind Rally Master Pro 3D [$4.99], Galaxy on Fire 3D [$2.99 / Free] (as well as its sequel) and many other games are soon bringing Earth Defender to the App Store. Earth Defender puts players to the task of, well, defending Earth. An array of aliens are attacking, and you’ve got to drop strategically placed bombs up in space for them to run in to and blow up. Enemies that explode will also cause chain reactions of explosions to other nearby enemies often creating massive and often unintentional screen-clearing combos.

EarthDefender_Screen_2

EarthDefender_Screen_2

Fishlabs mixes things up a bit with some fantastic graphics, cool sound effects, and multiple enemy types that require you to either tap them directly to fire a laser from Earth in order to destroy them, or tap and hold to fire a concentrated beam in some instances. Power-ups are plentiful which modify your default bombs in to having additional effects, such as the lightning bomb which seems to chain easier. Like any good Missile Defense game, there are also bigger bombs that clear the entire screen which are initiated by shaking your device.

You can see how all these things go together in the following gameplay video:

One final thing, and probably my favorite thing about Earth Defender is the introduction of bosses that take up the whole screen. Nothing makes a space game (or really any game) better than absolutely gigantic boss battles. Earth Defender is coming soon, and we will post more information as we hear it from Fishlabs. In the meantime, if you’re like me and somehow can still have fun playing Missile Command style games 30 years later, make sure Earth Defender is on your App Store watch list.

A set of screenshots were just released mere moments ago on EA Mobile’s fantastic Facebook page of R-Type, a classic arcade style side scrolling shooter originally released in 1987 which has since been ported to almost every platform imaginable. Set in the future, players control a futuristic fighter and set off to destroy Byrdo Empire. Along the way you basically shoot everything that moves (which also consequently is often shooting back at you), avoid constant bullet spam, and pick up various power-ups. R-Type is side scrolling shooting at its finest, and the game has become infamous over the years for its incredible level of difficulty.

EA has yet to announce a release date or pricing, but judging by how they’ve handled other pre-release games in the past on their Facebook, R-Type will likely appear on the App Store very soon. They’re claiming the game will be 100% true to the original, which seems like a lofty promise to make, but I’m keeping everything I have crossed that they manage to deliver. Tilt, touch, and virtual d-pad controls are included with multiple difficulty levels which will hopefully bring the difficulty of the game down to something a normal human can complete in their lifetime.

This week we have been chatting to Ian Garstang at Debug Design Limited which started life as a graphic design company who now make games. They currently have 3 games on the market; The Danger Room, Scribble Jumper (free) and one of our favorite games ‘Quizicards’. Ian took time out from his game graphic creation to talk us through his latest quiz game which wants to render other quiz apps useless by its create a quiz option and completely free download section.  Once a user has ian_appheadpurchased the app then not only do they get a set of standard questions but there is also a simple download area where you can search and download loads more quizzes for free.

– Tell us a bit about Debug Design and how/when you started the company?

Debug Design is essentially a graphic design studio.  We started 5 years ago and worked mainly of websites and print work.  Our portfolio then grew to include flash games as we always had a passion for game making but the currently 3D crop of super consoles meant we had missed the boat on making full price titles.  When the app store came out it game us a second chance.

– What attracted you to get into app development for the iphone?

We had always enjoyed making games and the app store meant that we cold start from the bottom and work our way up.  Retro was cool again and so we could begin with the basic games and as we learned more we could increase our game complexity.

– What software do you use when creating apps?

So far we have used GameSalad and native Xcode.  Gamesalad is a great place to start as its really easy to use and doesn’t require any programming skill.  If you want something more complex such as our Quizicards app then you need to program.

– What was the inspiration behind the ‘Quizicards’?

Quizicards was based on a friends episode where Ross quizzes the other friends to how much they know about each other.  I saw that there was lots of quiz apps out there but none that let you create your own quizzes and play with friends.  This concept then evolved into including gameshow style buttons, a tonne of optional extras and high score tables.  Once a person has bought the app they can get all the quizzes for FREE.  It sounds crazy but its true, there is thousands of questions already on line.

download-quizzes

– Would you say that your game ‘Scribble Jumper’ has a ‘visual style’ all its own and if so what attracted you to that style?

Scribble jumper is just a free app that I wanted to do as a challenge.  I wanted to see if I could make a game, start to finish in a weekend.  So one weekend I created scribble jumper.  I kept the style simplistic and colourful to make it easy to create elements for it fast.  It turned out better than expected.

opening_screen

– What have you found really helpful during development?

Forums, the Gamesalad one in particular.  People help people which is always encouraging

– What problems did you encounter creating it?

Time is the biggest problem, you really have to say to yourself that its going to take 3-6 months to create a game.  Rome wasn’t build in day.  If you make your peace with the time scale and don’t rush you will find the process a lot easier.

– What has been the biggest challenges you have had to over come?

Marketing is a pain, emails galore to get it reviewed and listed… we have spend days contacting people and we are still not close to letting people know its out there.

– How did you go about marketing your app and what do you expect to have the best return?

Submission to a whole lot of review sites, a few web advertisements and a lot of tweets.  Not sure about the return yet.

– What hints or tips would you give to budding developers?

Keep it simple and plan everything first…

– When CS5 arrives with flash/iphone support will this change the way you produce your games?

Sadly no, we got excited at first but apple are pulling flash games and Adobe are not continuing its app support.

– What does the future hold for Debug Design?

We have a couple of games in development which are bigger than anything we have attempted before and we are also busy working with other game developers creating graphics for their games which is great.

Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth is a tower defense strategy game set on the planet Hoth in the Star Wars universe. Under development for the past few months by Fluffylogic, a development house based in Bristol in the UK, the game will be released on the App Store by THQ. “Back in December 2009 we were contacted out of the blue by a representative of THQ about what we’d do with the Star Wars universe to play in,” says the games producer Ana Kronschnabl, “It took about 5 seconds to pick our favourite scene from the pantheon of the films. We all grew up with Episodes to IV to VI, so doing the battle of Hoth was always top of our list.”

SW_Battle_for_Hoth_09

For those of you that don’t remember, the battle of Hoth is the scene in the Empire Strikes Back with the large robot walkers set on the snow and ice planet Hoth. Game designer Tomas Rawlings commented on the setting for the game, “This game focuses on one of sci-fi’s most epic battles, it is epic because it has got it all – conflict, heroism, a back-against-the war struggle, cool military technology, good vs evil and of course AT-ATs.”

SW_Battle_for_Hoth_04

In the iPhone game you take the role of the commander of the Rebel forces defending the shield generators from the Imperial forces. As the game progresses through 15 levels, additional units will be added to both the Rebel and Imperial sides. Once a level has been completed on classic mode it can be played on fortress mode. In tower defense games you generally have some form of currency that allows you to build new units. In the Battle for Hoth game those are called command points. You only have a set number of command points per level thus can only build so many defense units. The key to the game is building the right kind of units and placing them in the proper locations to set up a proper defense.

Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth Game Information

General Information
Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth is a game for both iPhone and iPod. It is a tower defense strategy game; such games have the player placing defensive units to stop waves of enemy units from exiting the level. The game sees the player taking the role of commander of the Rebel forces trying to stop Imperial forces from reaching the main shield generators before the evacuation of Hoth is complete. As the game progresses new units for both the Rebel forces and the Imperial attackers are introduced. The game has 2 difficulty settings – easy and normal, plus comes with a help and unit guide.
Gameplay
The player begins each level with a set amount of Command Points. The player ’spends’ these by choosing a unit type and selecting where on the level to build them. Each unit can also be upgraded for additional Command Points. Upgrades add to a units power – depending on the unit type – increasing aspects such as range and damage. The player can also change the targeting orders for units – tell them to prioritise ground/air units or stronger/weaker units (though not all Rebel unit types can target flying units). This can be done on an a single unit or for all units at once. The player can also build trenches to both funnel the Imperial forces into kill-zones and to position infantry who gain extra protection once inside. Except for infantry, Rebel units require a power supply to operate.
Imperial forces emerge from staging areas to the left of the map and proceed to try to exit the level on the right, to damage the main shield generators. Once too much damage has been done to the main shield generators, the player has failed the level and must replay to progress. The various Imperial units do different amounts of damage to the main shield generators.
Battlefield
The game is set on the planet of Hoth – it features 15 levels. Initially each level is played in ‘Classic Mode’. In this mode once the player’s defences have destroyed each group of Imperial attackers, a Command Points bonus token is left behind. By touching these the player can collect them and earn additional Command Points. If the player collects multiple tokens with a single sweep of the finger, bonus Command Points are awarded. However, leaving Command Points bonus tokens risks the value of them degrading over time.
Once a level has been completed in ‘classic mode’, it is available to play again in ‘Fortress Mode’. In this mode the player get a larger starting pool of Command Points, but does not gain any additional during the game. The player collects Score Points bonus tokens instead which add to the player final score.
Unit List
Rebel Units

  • Soldier – A basic infantry unit armed with a blaster rifle. This unit requires no additional
power but is vulnerable to heavy fire. Place in trenches to improve their defensive
capabilities. Can only target ground units.
  • Heavy Weapon Soldier – A solider armed with a powerful repeating blaster. This unit requires no additional power but is vulnerable to heavy fire. Place in trenches to improve their defensive capabilities. Can target ground and air units.
  • Power Generator – Provides all units within range with an energy supply.
  • 1.4 FD P-Tower Laser Cannon – High damage ground-to-ground combat weapon. Can only target ground units.
  • DF.9 Anti-Infantry Battery Tower – Effective against infantry, but vulnerable to larger units. Can target ground and air units.
  • Ion Cannon – High power consumption but very powerful weapon. Can target ground and air units. To vehicles the ion-impact disrupts the electrical systems slowing the unit down. To infantry the heat of the impact can kill.
  • Snowspeeder Control Tower – Launches a single Snowspeeder which completes it’s attack run before returning to the base. Can only target ground based units.
  • X-wing Control Tower – Launches a single X-wing fighter which completes it’s attack run before returning to the base. Targets only air units.
  • Energy Shield Generator – Generates a localised Energy Shield that protects all Rebel units within its range. If the Energy Shield collapses, the generator unit is destroyed.

Imperial Units

  • Viper Probe Droids – Fast but with weak armour, these units are used by the Imperial forces as cannon fodder.
  • Scout Trooper – Fast but vulnerable infantry. These troops are the advance of the main force.
  • Snowtroopers – Elite infantry trained to fight on any world. Deployed in large numbers to hammer at enemy defenses.
  • 74-Z Speeder Bike – Often used as a scouting unit or for rapid attack. This air unit is fast speed with weak armour.
  • AT-ST Walker – A fast walker with medium armour. Designed for hit and run attacks on enemy defenses.
  • TIE Fighter – The main multi-role space fighter of the Imperial forces. This air unit is also used to attack ground targets.
  • AT-AT Walker – Huge, heavily armoured walkers that are deployed to smash foes into submission either by being shot or crushed. These units ignore trenches and can crush all in their path.
  • Command Units – ‘Boss’ versions of existing units but much stronger and tougher. Concentrate your fire at them to stop their advance.

AppTrawler has been given the exclusive preview of upcoming quiz app Quizicards. A slick and good looking quiz app that comes with 1000 questions, however what really interested us is the ability to create and share quizzes for FREE.  The developers have shown us a huge list of quizzes already online for you to download including a huge range of topics including, Harry Potter, Superheroes, Spanish Words, Wines of the World and even Key stage 2 Science.

Developer notes:

main_screen480

Quizicards is an iphone application which turns the room into a quiz show. The application has two sides, the quizmaster and the contestant; the quizmaster can ask various questions to the audience turning any dinner party, gathering or bored moment into a fun packed quiz.  The app has loads of questions split into ‘general knowledge’ ‘categories’ and specialist subjects’ which means the game type can vary.  They can either choose ‘individuals’ or ‘multiple’ contestants which also changes the game type.

card-multiple480-3

How it works
On load, the user will choose the game type and the amount of players and then the quizmaster will will show the user a pack of quiz cards with the questions and answers on. There will also be a timer for each question.  quizmaster will change cards by running their left or right thumb over the side of the screen (as if putting a card to the back of the pack). When a round is over the app tots up the players score and adds it to a table.  This repeats for the various contestants until the 1, 3, 5 rounds have been exhausted.

6-players

The contestant
If there are multiple iphone users playing the game they can also press the ‘contestant’ option which allows the users to choose a sound effect from various choices which will be assigned to their ‘answer button’.  The user can tap the screen to answer a question.

Create your own quizzes
Users can create their own quizzes, upload them to the site and download other peoples quizzes.

EARN $0.50 for each quiz uploaded (Terms & Conditions Apply)

Could this app make all the other quiz apps redundant? AppTrawler received a development build and the app looks easy to use and has a stack of options which might take time to get used to but it nice to be able to create a quiz to your own specifications.  If the quiz community get behind the app then we foresee this having a permanent position on our iphones.

The app has now been submitted to the App Store for review so we should have another update for you when its out.

In the meantime, check out this video:

As if bluetooth iPhone to iPad control wasn’t enough, Majic Jungle’s followup iPad trick is outputting the iPad game video to a 42″ TV while controlling the game with your iPhone:
I know it shouldn’t be that much different than the first video, but somehow it feels quite different. While Apple should allow this functionality to be built into future iPad apps, Majic Jungle hasn’t committed to delivering it in their release:

This video shows the iPad version plugged into a 42 inch LCD TV via the standard Apple component cable. It is also being controlled with an iPhone over bluetooth.

This setup uses only available public/documented APIs so could technically be made available. However this is only a proof of concept, the initial release of Chopper 2 may not feature this functionality.

Chopper 2 remains in development and will be coming for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch platforms.

Angry birds originally came out for the iPhone and has recently been brought to the iPad as an HD. The app is another physics-based game which focuses on knocking down different structures and crushing every pig found inside. Stars are earned for each level based on how many launches it takes to crush every one.

The gameplay is very simple. Users start a launch from the slingshot and depending on what bird is being launched, they might have to tap again to activate the ability. The game features some wacky birds each with their own unique abilities.

After passing various sections, different birds will be unlocked and the user’s ability to use each bird’s various skills will determine if they pass the level or not. The iPad is the perfect setting for a game like this but there really isn’t anything that has changed between the versions. This means if you’ve already purchased the cheap iPhone version, you’ll have to repurchase the new app for 5x the price. For some of you, that may be worth it, but for most of us this is extra money we don’t want to have to spend.

Overall, the game is still amazingly fun, but I personally couldn’t justify purchasing the same exact experience over again for extra money. Check it out.

Plants vs Zombies HD is an app created by veteran casual game maker PopCap. It is an upscaled version of the iPhone version made for the iPad. The game is essentially a tower defense game which pits your own homegrown plants against an onslaught of evil zombies. As you progress through the game, you will collect new types of plants to counter the growing variety of mind-munching monsters attacking your door.

You will utilize the long range peashooters, the explosive cherry bombs, the sunshine-producing sunflowers, and many more. In order to produce more plants, you will have to collect sunshine that falls from the sky or plant sunflowers to produce extra resources. The game begins with only one row of attacking zombies but as you grow in experience, the game will expand to 5 rows of mayhem.

In later levels, the placement of various plants becomes key. New types of zombies will attack quickly or become extremely difficult to take down.

Overall, the game is a great mixture of cartoon fun and solid strategy. It offers enough difficulty to keep you guessing and the adrenaline pumping but it also brings a relaxing experience for anyone to enjoy. The graphics and sounds are absolutely at home on the iPad making this the absolute best way to play the game. It’s priced higher like most iPad games, but I think it is definitely worth it. Check it out.

Real Racing was and is still one of the greatest racing games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. With the release of the iPad, Firemint decided to rerelease their hit game in true HD form. The game looks even better than before on the new device and they even added a few new features. Because AppVee has already reviewed this game, I’m going to only talk about the newer features in the app. The game has definitely updated the graphics with new high-resolution textures and a much smoother experience.

Everything from the menus to the actual environment looks amazing and truly represents some of what the iPad can do.

Screenshot3

Another interesting feature added is the ability to customize the skins of your car. Select an image from your library and the app will automatically wrap it around the car. You can also export the built-in skins, edit them, and import them to make a custom skin that looks perfect in the game.

Users can now also race against their ghost in time-trial mode and watch replays with different camera angles. This new game is sure to win the hearts of racing fans and is a great way to start your iPad collection. Check it out.
