The Asphalt series has gone airborne in the 8th outing for this hugely popular series. As you would expect, Gameloft has nailed the handling of the cars using the right amount of tilt action to control your vehicle. Acceleration and speed is automatic and you have control over the nitro bursts with one thumb and breaking or power sliding with the other. The game is great fun for the price tag as you have a massive 8 seasons and 180 races to complete. All of these races are set over a limited amount of countries but each track has a myriad of alternative routes and sneaky short cuts.
asphalt-8-airborne-2
Whilst the game is thoroughly enjoyable, some parts do involve a bit of grinding in order to get enough cash to improve your car and buy better rides. This wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t the constant reminder that real money can buy you cash and car packs go help speed up or improve the game.if you are fine with the simple cars and do not yearn for the Camaro or that Electric Mercedes from Transformers 3 then you’ll be fine. Otherwise you will find yourself perusing the cars packs being tempted to spend some cash. Sadly, no one pack can be bought that would give you a range of cars across classes which is a little sneaky.

As you can guess from the name, Asphalt 8 takes to the skies as ramps, jumps and bridges give you the chance to gain extra nitro power as you hang ten and grab some air. Many of the star achievements ask you to perform airborne tricks such as barrel rolls and spins in order to get the maximum five stars. Whilst this is a great addition to the series, some of the tricks don’t always activate as you expect and can be a little glitchy. This however, is rare and some times you welcome the simple jump as tricks can often cost you speed.

asphalt-8-airborne-main-screen

Aside from the usual racing mode there are two additional game types called ‘infected’ and ‘knockdown’. Infected sees players getting infected by other cars (and going green) and using their unlimited nitro boosts attempt to infect other players before burning out. Knockdown is less about the racing and more about the destruction as the cars all attempt to gain the most amount of crashes.

The multiplayer game experience blew my mind, as I didn’t think such an experience was possible on a tablet. There is always people to race and apart from a few people leaving the race seconds before the end (usually when they are losing) the race feels solid and enjoyable.

With fantastic graphics, a tremendous sense of speed and a game that could last for months, Asphalt 8 is a truly awesome racing game that despite its ‘pay to win’ reminders has to be one of the best racing games on a tablet device. For only 69p its well worth a try if only for the Mini racing around London.

We first saw the beginnings of Freeverse’s Flick Baseball at WWDC last year, and I can only imagine how long it had been in development before then. Much like the recently released Warpgate [iPhone: $4.99 / iPad: $7.99], it’s immediately evident that a lot of time and effort went in to this game.

flick-baseball1Flick Baseball is a full 3D baseball game that looks and plays a lot like a fleshed out version of Com2Us’s Homerun Battle 3D [$4.99 / Free] with 3D players, tilt to aim batting, and some extra features such as being able to control your runners and where your outfielders throw the ball. Since Homerun Battle 3D is still one of my favorite iPhone games, I’m really happy with how Freeverse seems to have captured a very similar batting mechanic that works extremely well.

flick-baseball2

I’ve barely begun to scratch the surface of Flick Baseball, as we’ll be saving that for our in-depth look in our full review, but this is a very complete baseball game. You can play both 3 and 9 inning baseball games in two different difficulty modes, and the entire game is driven by this crazy subsystem of player statistics. Some players bat better than others and as such have a much larger hit zone when they swing, and others require your aim to be practically perfect when batting to hit. There are tons of other stats that control every attribute of each player of your team.

34 teams are included, and you can build your own team with a custom name, lineup, uniform color, roster, stats, and everything else. You could likely spend hours doing nothing other than building custom teams in this game if you wanted to. There are full 11, 33, 66, and 165 game season modes with all kinds of stat tracking, a playoff mode, and the games even change from night to day depending on the actual time of day it is in the city you’re playing at.

Here is a video of me playing a couple innings, which features a lot of strike outs and a beginner’s luck home run:

Flick Baseball should be available May 3rd, so keep an eye out for a full review and another video of me (hopefully) hitting nothing but home runs with my tricked out custom baseball team. So far I’m really enjoying the game a lot, and look forward to getting deeper in to it.

Lately it seems that we’ve been collecting an increasing number of comments in the discussions of some of the more popular games we’ve covered from Android users hoping to see more iPhone games in the Android Marketplace. Homerun Battle 3D [.99 / Free], a game we reviewed back when it was called Baseball Slugger, was released early last month for Android devices, and features cross-platform multiplayer– Allowing existing

iPhone players to face off against Android-equipped online rivals.

Com2Us sent us the following video of a match between an iPhone and a Motorola Droid:

As more and more iPhone games eventually make their way to the Android Marketplace, I hope developers decide to follow Com2Us’s lead and implement cross-platform multiplayer. The more people playing online the better, regardless of what game it is.

If you remember playing any of the various snowboarding games on the original Playstation, MyTP Snowboarding just might take you for a stroll down memory lane. This v.1.0.0 release by randerline starts off with a neat introductory montage of actual snowboarding footage. There are two modes available to play, World Tour and QuickPlay. The 3D graphics are simple but clean, reminiscent of a time before high-definition gaming. The background music changes with the slopes, however you have the ability to change the song by shaking the iPhone. There isn’t an option to play your own music while playing the game yet, but you can turn off both the background music and the sound effects in the settings menu. The variety of characters (including 3 pros) and 10 different snowboards are available to you from the start, and even though the choices are limited, it still presents a nice variation from the “unlockables” trend we’ve all grown used to.

The controls are given before the start of the run as a diagram. MyTP Snowboarding makes use of the accelerometer for maneuvering your character and the touch screen for doing tricks. You tilt/turn to veer left or right and your thumb placement on the screen determines which trick you perform. This might be hard to decipher at first but becomes easier as you get more acquainted with the game. With over 500 tricks to attempt and plenty of half-pipes and ramps to try them on, MyTP provides enough for a quick, fun and straightforward powder time.

Priced at $2.99, MyTP Snowboarding is a solid, albeit limited game. With 3 resorts, 9 slopes and 9 missions, its features (or lack thereof) may leave something to be desired, but nothing I figure future potential updates can’t remedy. Check out the clip below of the potential things you can do with MyTP Snowboarding.

NaturalMotion’s Backbreaker Football [App Store] is part physics engine tech demo and part arcade sports game combined together to create a tilt-controlled pick up and play experience that is extremely enjoyable despite being so simple.

The gameplay of Backbreaker is structured in to a series of challenges where you run down a football field juking, spinning, and sprinting past defenders attempting to tackle you. You run by tilting your device forward, and the direction you run is controlled by tilting left or right similar to how you would control a racing game.

The different levels start simple, initially only asking you to evade a few defenders on a wide open field. Backbreaker quickly adds a twist with the inclusion of red lines on the field that you must run between without getting tackled. Step across one of these lines and you have to start the whole level over.

In our review we even drew comparisons to the legendary and beloved Doodle Jump. Some of the complaints lodged against the original on our forums regarded the difficulty level and the amount of challenges in the game. NaturalMotion responded by releasing the 1.1 update which features a new challenge mode with 10 additional waves of defenders as well as both pro and hardcore difficulty modes. (And even an unlockable Backbreaker helmet.)

I had a great time with the original, and the update only serves to improve the game even more. Unlocking the higher difficulty levels involves playing through the normal difficulty, so if you have deleted the game from your phone since its release you will need to make your way past the standard set of challenges again to ramp up the difficulty.

Gameloft has released their much anticipated skateboarding game Skater Nation into the App Store this evening. We already had some brief hands on time with the game last week and really enjoyed what we saw of it.

Skater Nation is an open-world skateboarding game which really puts the other skateboarding titles available on the platform to shame when it comes to overall depth and complexity. Obviously inspired by the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series of games, Skater Nation runs inside of a game engine that was described as a “sibling” to the one used in Gangstar to have a completely open city with multiple environments with absolutely no loading time as you travel from place to place.

The city consists of ten highly skater-friendly locales that range from indoor factories to an outdoor skate park, and even a street that was inspired by Lombard Street in San Francisco and two main game modes, you can either freely skate around the city, or progress through a career mode.

Skater_Nation_EN_2

Unlockable equipment includes 10 skateboard decks, 10 trucks, and 10 wheel sets, each of which enhance your skater’s stats. The game is controlled using a virtual joystick and two buttons which handle all the different moves your skater is capable of. Skater Nation also has a nice replay mode where you can rewind the last 3-4 minutes of gameplay to save replays of cool tricks, jumps, or combos you were able to pull off. These replays can then be uploaded to YouTube.

Early impressions are being collected in our forums.

The MiniGolf 99 Holes Theme Park app for iPhone and iPod touch is a fun game that offers comic characters and challenging gameplay. Play like Tiger Woods and challenge your way through all 99 Holes and prove you’re the best.

You will start with the Gold rating and it eventually decreases depending on the number of strokes taken, golden tickets and stars collected as well as the number of times the ball hits the edge of the course. When the entire course is cleared, a new character gets unlocked and be added letting you switch the players. Every character has their own specialty. Each course has its own features that makes each level tricky and challenging. Be sure to read the ability of each character and find out for which course they are best suited for.

The only thing that somehow kills the game is the movement of the camera that doesn’t follow every hole of the game together with the stroke meter which regularly covers up the location of the hole. The controls somehow fall short on the direction of the balls as well as the power meter is too fast when tapped. It also takes time to load the game. Mini Golf by Digital Chocolate again is a great iPhone game of speed versus precision which makes it a total fun despite of minor setbacks.

Sample the lite version of Mini Golf 99 Holes Theme Park on your iPhone for free.

PZS_logoZombie games and the App Store seem to go together like peas and carrots. I’m not sure what the allure of zombies is, but I’m not one to argue about slaying legions of undead. Developers Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team (Yes, that’s their real name) have been working on a sports zombie apocalypse hybrid for quite some time now, and finally seeing it in motion with this gameplay video is truly something to behold.

Details are vague right now, but the developers have provided us this list of things to expect in Pro Zombie Soccer:

  • One of the most surreal and funny stories to ever grace a videogame.
  • Lots of different zombies for your zombie killing pleasure, all of them with different hit points.
  • A powerful blockbuster-type soundtrack and sound design.
  • And of course: a nice combo system; different levels; Zombie Odyssey Mode for the hardcore gamers; character skill upgrading system.

If you’ve watched the video and think there are some strong similarities to the art and animations in Plants Vs. Zombies, it’s because Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team is comprised of an international team of seasoned game industry veterans with titles under their belt such as Worms, Vin Diesel’s Wheelman, the EyeToy Play series, and Plants Vs. Zombies itself.

Pro Zombie Soccer is still in development, for the most up to date news on the game’s progress, check out the official thread on the touch arcade forums.

It’s not entirely fair, or particularly accurate, to compare Fishlab’s rally driving simulator Rally Master Pro two other high-performance racing games currently on iPhone.

Whereas most racing games pitch you directly against other cars and drivers, Rally Master Pro keeps strictly to its remit by following the point-to-point asynchronous racing format.

This means there’s only ever one car on the screen in Rally Master Pro, which frees up the system resources to
go to town on features like realistic driving physics, reactive road surfaces, particle systems and weather conditions.

It’s this attention to microscopic detail that earned the mobile version of Rally Master Pro a Platinum Award, and the iPhone adaptation – which has been rebuilt from the ground up – is now revving its engine on the App Store ready for you to get behind the £4.99 wheel.

Have another look at the official trailer below, then put your foot down on the ‘Buy It!’ button and get over to the App Store and check it out.

NBA Live has been around for a while now, but like the Oklahoma City Thunder a new home makes for a totally different ball game.

The series’s App Store arrival comes with easy-going gameplay and straightforward touch controls tailored for accessibility. It’s a solid foundation for what amounts to a young game, though one that lacks the sophistication to be an all-star.

All 30 NBA teams are here and warmed up for play across three modes: Exhibition, Season, and Playoffs. Right off the bat, the game fouls by not including any sort of multiplayer. Online play would have been our wish, though at the very least local wi-fi and peer-to-peer Bluetooth games ought to have been supported.

The omission of multiplayer puts a lot of pressure on Season mode to deliver the goods. Unfortunately, too many features are lacking on the management side of things for it to feel like anything more than a string of Exhibition match ups.

Incorporating elements from the PSP version’s Dynasty mode, such as skill training mini-games and team goal-setting, would bring depth to Season mode off the court. You can thankfully adjust your rosters, editing starters and initiating trades for a baseline level of team management.

You have far more control of things on the court. Players are moved using a context-sensitive analogue stick that appears wherever you press your thumb on the left-half of the screen. A pair of red and blue buttons on the right correspond to offensive shooting and passing, respectively. On defence, these change to steals and swipes via the blue button and jump blocks and rebounds with the red.

Offence plays like a charm as a result of such a simple control scheme. You’re able to easily drive to the net and nail shots, making accurate passes and pump fakes with nuanced presses and flicks of the blue button. Along with tapping, you can flick the blue button to initiate a pump fake and circumvent a defender.

Additionally, you can specify passes by holding down on the button to coordinate a pass in slow motion. Coloured icons above each player relay the probability of executing a solid pass.

A similar option for selecting players is available on defence. It’s the game’s best feature and one that demonstrates the effort taken to make the series more accessible on iPhone and iPod touch.

Shots are layered in a similar way. Basic shots are taken with a tap of the red button, whereas more difficult dunks can be triggered with a hold of the button while underneath the basket. It’s not just about tapping the red button and moving on – timing is essential since lifting your thumb from the screen at the height of your player’s jump improves the likelihood of the shot.

This same level of depth is absent from the defensive game. Jamming on the blue button in hopes of a steal is about all you can do on defence, save for the occasional rebound. You’re able to alter zone cover from the clipboard in the upper-right corner, yet it’s nowhere near the sophistication of offensive play calling.

As a starting point on iPhone and iPod touch, NBA Live delivers a decent decent ball game. The controls are right and offence is a blast. Improving the defensive game, adding multiplayer, and fleshing out the single player modes with more features need to be on the to-do list for next year’s inevitable instalment if it’s to be a real baller.

IMG_0921Last weekend was the Big Buck Hunter Pro world championship held in Chicago, IL and aside from thousands of dollars of prize money that was given away, they were also giving people the first look at the upcoming iPhone game.

The iPhone version is based on the series of Big Buck Hunter arcade machines which originally debuted all the way back in 2001. Since then, there have been several spin-off machines that have you hunting things like big horn sheep, elk, and even antelope. The arcade game is played using a shotgun aimed at the screen to shoot whatever it is you’re hunting and often can be found at bars right next to the Golden Tee machine.

IMG_0923

The iPhone, obviously lacking any light gun accessories uses your fingers to do the shooting. This mobile version of the game plays remarkably similar to the arcade machine, although quite a bit of the allure of Big Buck Hunter has always been playing it while you’re out drinking with friends and there isn’t much the iPhone can do the emulate that.

In the following video I go over all the functionality of the game including shooting deer, the bonus stages, online leaderboards, and even the ability to use your GPS coordinates to find the nearest arcade machine:

[ Full HD version | Low Bandwidth version ]

Big Buck Hunter has an absolutely massive following, and it’s great to see an iPhone port of the game that is actually fairly representative of the original instead of a quick cash-in on the series. Big Buck Hunter Pro is expected to be available soon, and while no price has been announced yet, I’m sure the iPhone game will be much cheaper than a single night of pumping quarters in to a real Big Buck Hunter machine.

We’ve already had developer Firemint releasing a free version of its Real Racing game as part of an advertising campaign for Volkswagen today and now comes news that Reebok is getting in on the act.

Reebok iSprint, from UK developer ustwo in conjunction with mobile marketing agency Inside Mobile, is now live on the App Store.

It’s a neat little app that has you running the 100m with your fingers – basically flick running – to get the fastest time you can.

Reebok iSprint links up to a global scoring system that is already peaking at around 7.5 second, or around three seconds faster than my little fingers can run.

There’s also a two player Bluetooth head-to-head mode, while you can run through four courses – indoor, outdoor, grass, and tarmac.

Obviously, the point of the game is for Reebok to advertises its ware, so after each race, you’ll be hit with a geographically localised, full-screen ad, which allows Reebok to serve up fresh offers and content to different markets.

And as you get better at iSprint, you’ll also be provided with discount voucher codes on Reebok clothes and shoes which you redeem via reebok.com.

Reebok iSprint is available for free. Hit the Buy It! button to run over to the App Store.

Eidos Interactive and Dynamo Games have combined again to create Championship Manager 2010 for iPhone, which is out now on the App Store.

Last season’s effort, Championship Manager 2009, didn’t live up to most people’s expectations – largely because it was a conversion of the Symbian release.

As any football manager will tell you when taking on a new job, progress often requires a complete rebuild of the team.

Dynamo has adopted just such a philosophy for the 2010 edition, creating a bespoke iPhone footy management experience. As such, the games had a total revamp, with an improved 2D match engine and detailed press conferences.

You’ll also be able to play alongside real-life managers in CM Season Live, though it appears you’ll need a copy of the CM 2010 PC game to make use of this online functionality.

We’ve also been assured that update packs will be released throughout the season to reflect real-world player movements.champ-manager-2

Serious bowlers know who Brunswick is… their name is all over every bowling alley on the planet. And now their name is all over a pretty incredible bowling app that’s already made a name for itself on the PS2, PSP, and Wii.

Brunswick Pro Bowling for iPhone is so packed with features it’s hard to know where to start… choose your player, choose your ball, choose your locale, choose motion control or finger control, choose your throwing angle… I think my head’s gonna explode! Ok seriously, this app is pretty insane. It’s not flashy and colorful like Gameloft’s Midnight Bowling (which I’ve never played, just going off the screenshots), but the production quality is definitely top-shelf and the gameplay is 100% what you want from an iPhone bowling game.

It would take forever for me to write, and forever for you to read, a complete first-person account of all the tiny little details Crave Entertainment has built into Brunswick Pro Bowling, so let’s just take a quick look at the important stuff:

  • Single Player Quick Mode allows you to skip choosing a player and a ball and just get down to bowling
  • If you do choose to go custom, there are 8 players (4 guys, 4 girls) and 10 balls (some of which have to be unlocked by being an awesome bowler!)
  • You get to choose whether your bowler is a lefty or righty
  • There are 5 different locales where you can bowl (again, some have to be unlocked)
  • Each locale has different oil patterns that affect ball movement (!)
  • Each player and each ball have attributes that affect hooking and accuracy
  • Multiplayer mode includes up to 4 players and can be vs. computer or pass-n-play with friends
  • You can bowl with finger swipes or a full accelerometer-driven arm swing (aka “motion control”)

Although I can’t honestly say that I’ve gauged and measured the attributes that come with different players and bowling balls in Brunswick Pro Bowling, I can say that the attributes are there and *hopefully* it matters who you choose to throw which ball! Sorry, I’m a creature of habit and since I’m a hook bowler in real life I tend to stick to what I know in the virtual world as well.

Hooking your ball down the lane is easy with finger control as all it takes is a curved finger swipe, but doing the same with motion control is a bit tougher and, in my experience, not quite as reliable. It does work, though, if you turn your hand at the right moment when you’re swinging your arm with iPhone in hand. The tough part is releasing your thumb from the screen at the right time; if you screw that up, you might just wind up tossing a stinker that you could have thrown blindfolded.

Brunswick claims that this game features “REAL pin physics” and I believe them because I get ripped off on spares as often in this game as I do in real life! The pin action really does look convincing and, based on my own experiences as a terrible bowler, everything does indeed seem to be right on. Probably the greatest aspect of this game, for me anyway, is the pass-n-play mode. Bowling is fun, but it’s always more fun with friends! Maybe that’s why it’s pretty rare to see lone bowlers heaving ball after ball down the lane on Friday nights (those losers tend to stick to daytime hours… believe me, I know!).

If you’re not a huge fan of bowling then maybe you’d be better off trying out (free) iBowl first but, for those who really want the whole experience, this is absolutely the way to go. Not only does Brunswick Pro Bowling come equipped with options galore, but it also pays attention to smaller areas like playing well with the iPod, spouting odd bowling trivia while the app is loading, and telling you what the nicknames are for various pin formations. Brunswick’s name is legendary in the bowling world, and by the looks of this app I’d say they’re serious about keeping it that way.

Look how clever I am... I named my bowler Pinhead, har har This dude looks like he could kick my ass

I'll take the 8 lb. ball please! Sorry, I'm just weak Seems like every annoying pin formation has a nickname
Aim your ball by dragging two different points on the lane before you throw I'm a geek and I like bowling, but I'm not enough of a bowling geek to understand oil patterns!

MicroPool is a 3D pool game with spectacular visual effects. The application has a slim and efficient feel to it as games load almost instantly. It advertises itself as a 3D pool simulator with great detail to graphics and sound effects. In my opinion, MicroPool is charming and loads of fun to play because the developer spent a lot of time fine tuning the app to be a fun arcade style pool simulator. The physics of the game are good, but not what I would call realistic as the balls seem to experience little resistance when hit. However, the physics never once took away from my enjoyment of the game, but those more die hard pool players might feel differently.

There are four games to choose from, each with their unique challenges: US 8 Ball, 9-ball, Killer, and Speed. Players have the option to compete against a computer or live person sharing one device. If you want to watch an automated game, just select the Phone vs Phone option from the main screen. I’ve never seen this option in a game before, but it’s nice as it gives you the opportunity to see how the computer deals with certain situations.

MicroPool’s bread and butter are the superb graphics and realistic sound effects. Beautiful light reflections as well as high quality 3D rendering give an immersive and sophisticated feel to the game. Everything seems to be rendered in real time. I noticed a slight FPS drop when breaking on my iPhone 3G, but it’s only momentary. I trust on the new iPod touch and iPhone 3GS this would not happen. The sound effects are what you would expect from a pool game and do not disappoint.

My only wish is that there was a way to flip the orientation of the pool table as some shots require you to flip your device upside down. Unfortunately, the hitting control remains in its original position which makes using it a little awkward, but not impossible. Another nice feature would be a small list of statistics for wins, loses, and balls pocketed.

Overall, this game is a lot of fun and I keep going back to it time and time again. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who loves pool or pool simulators. The easy gameplay, rich graphics and sounds make this game a steal at the price. With a free lite version, there is no reason not to check it out.

Developer Realtech VR has been in touch to announce Iron Fist Boxing 3rd Strike is now available on the App Store.

And at first glance it appears to be a real contender for the iPhone heavyweight boxing title.

The game, developed for iPod touch and iPhone, has been described by Realtech VR as, “the original real-time 3D MMA fighting game on the App Store”. Now in its third incarnation it continues to build on the success of its predecessors.

Iron Fist Boxing
comes complete with three entirely new game modes: Speed bag training, punching bag training and punch-o-meter.

And with a longer career mode enabling you to fight in numerous locations and against more characters than ever, the new version ensures you won’t get tired of punching people in the face any time soon.

With regards to gameplay the developer has promised a “totally revamped input system that is far more responsive” as well as “high quality audio and real time 3D graphics never seen on the iPhone”.

What’s more you can listen to your own iPod library while still hearing in-game sound effects. So, Eye of the Tiger combined the relentless pounding of leather on eyeball sockets it is then.

Other new features enable you to compare stats with friends wirelessly as well as gain access to the worldwide online score board in order to see who the champ really is.

An online multiplayer mode is currently in beta, so hopefully you’ll be able to touch gloves and come out roundhouse kicking strangers in the head in the near future.

Check out the action in following video.

At EA’s Naughty or Nice press event this afternoon in the heart of New York City we were able to get our hands on NBA Live, the first fully licensed complete 5 on 5 basketball game available for the iPhone. My time with the game was somewhat limited, but I walked away impressed with what EA Mobile was able to squeeze out of the device.

As we mentioned in our earlier post with the bundle of screenshots EA released, NBA Live is a remarkably full featured game. All 30 NBA teams with complete player rosters are in game, along with each team’s respective stadium. All of the team and player stat tracking is in place very similar to Madden 10, and there’s even different season modes that you can either play or simulate all the way to the NBA finals.

Like most sports games (or other games with lots of action), the screenshots barely do NBA Live justice. Watching the game in motion with ten players on the court complete with shoes squeaking and the crowd either cheering or jeering really impressed me.

7825_155785667345_46940027345_2648383_3314455_n

If you’ve ever played a basketball video game before, the controls will come naturally. A virtual analog stick controls your movement and a set of two buttons handle different functions whether you’re on offense or defense. When you have the ball, one button passes while another shoots, dunks, and does other trick shots depending on how long you press the button and which way you flick your thumb afterward. When the opposing team has the ball, these buttons handle cycling through players and blocking.

A button in the top right corner momentarily pauses the game and allows you to issue commands to the rest of your teammates to support you through various plays whether you want to pick and roll or set yourself up for a three pointer. Free throws are executed via tilting. You tilt the phone back toward you, then flip it forward. How straight you were able to flick the phone backwards and forward controls your accuracy.

The free throw tilt mechanic felt a little gimmicky, but penalties seemed rare enough that shooting free throws likely won’t be a main part of the game. One thing that really piqued my interest during my discussions today with EA was the inclusion of unlockable NBA legends. Buried deep inside of the game are NBA greats like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and others.

The following promotional video is from EA’s latest build of NBA Live, it’s still a work in progress, so try not to pass final judgment on the game based on what you see here:

Overall NBA Live is working up to be a very promising title for basketball fans. EA was reluctant to give a firm date on when they expect to have the game ready for release, but were hopeful that it will be in gamers’ hands later this fall.
