If you’ve been looking for an online pool game, here’s your chance. Namco’s Pool Pro Online 3 for iPhone and iPad are now free for a day.

This represents the 3rd in the franchise which originally began on mobile phones but is now extending to smartphones and even the desktop. The game allows both single player and online play in 8-ball, 9-ball and Snooker. Players can also make in-game wagers against their opponents and use winnings to upgrade table felts, cue sticks and new pool halls. The 3d game allows you to rotate your view and pinch/zoom to line up your shot.

The games are free for Wednesday only (normally $4.99). Pool Pro Online 3 represents the launch title for Namco’s UniteSDK which provides achievements, leaderboards and cross-platform online play.

MicroPool is a 3D pool game with spectacular visual effects. The application has a slim and efficient feel to it as games load almost instantly. It advertises itself as a 3D pool simulator with great detail to graphics and sound effects. In my opinion, MicroPool is charming and loads of fun to play because the developer spent a lot of time fine tuning the app to be a fun arcade style pool simulator. The physics of the game are good, but not what I would call realistic as the balls seem to experience little resistance when hit. However, the physics never once took away from my enjoyment of the game, but those more die hard pool players might feel differently.

There are four games to choose from, each with their unique challenges: US 8 Ball, 9-ball, Killer, and Speed. Players have the option to compete against a computer or live person sharing one device. If you want to watch an automated game, just select the Phone vs Phone option from the main screen. I’ve never seen this option in a game before, but it’s nice as it gives you the opportunity to see how the computer deals with certain situations.

MicroPool’s bread and butter are the superb graphics and realistic sound effects. Beautiful light reflections as well as high quality 3D rendering give an immersive and sophisticated feel to the game. Everything seems to be rendered in real time. I noticed a slight FPS drop when breaking on my iPhone 3G, but it’s only momentary. I trust on the new iPod touch and iPhone 3GS this would not happen. The sound effects are what you would expect from a pool game and do not disappoint.

My only wish is that there was a way to flip the orientation of the pool table as some shots require you to flip your device upside down. Unfortunately, the hitting control remains in its original position which makes using it a little awkward, but not impossible. Another nice feature would be a small list of statistics for wins, loses, and balls pocketed.

Overall, this game is a lot of fun and I keep going back to it time and time again. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who loves pool or pool simulators. The easy gameplay, rich graphics and sounds make this game a steal at the price. With a free lite version, there is no reason not to check it out.
