AppTrawler has been given the exclusive preview of upcoming quiz app Quizicards. A slick and good looking quiz app that comes with 1000 questions, however what really interested us is the ability to create and share quizzes for FREE.  The developers have shown us a huge list of quizzes already online for you to download including a huge range of topics including, Harry Potter, Superheroes, Spanish Words, Wines of the World and even Key stage 2 Science.

Developer notes:

main_screen480

Quizicards is an iphone application which turns the room into a quiz show. The application has two sides, the quizmaster and the contestant; the quizmaster can ask various questions to the audience turning any dinner party, gathering or bored moment into a fun packed quiz.  The app has loads of questions split into ‘general knowledge’ ‘categories’ and specialist subjects’ which means the game type can vary.  They can either choose ‘individuals’ or ‘multiple’ contestants which also changes the game type.

card-multiple480-3

How it works
On load, the user will choose the game type and the amount of players and then the quizmaster will will show the user a pack of quiz cards with the questions and answers on. There will also be a timer for each question.  quizmaster will change cards by running their left or right thumb over the side of the screen (as if putting a card to the back of the pack). When a round is over the app tots up the players score and adds it to a table.  This repeats for the various contestants until the 1, 3, 5 rounds have been exhausted.

6-players

The contestant
If there are multiple iphone users playing the game they can also press the ‘contestant’ option which allows the users to choose a sound effect from various choices which will be assigned to their ‘answer button’.  The user can tap the screen to answer a question.

Create your own quizzes
Users can create their own quizzes, upload them to the site and download other peoples quizzes.

EARN $0.50 for each quiz uploaded (Terms & Conditions Apply)

Could this app make all the other quiz apps redundant? AppTrawler received a development build and the app looks easy to use and has a stack of options which might take time to get used to but it nice to be able to create a quiz to your own specifications.  If the quiz community get behind the app then we foresee this having a permanent position on our iphones.

The app has now been submitted to the App Store for review so we should have another update for you when its out.

In the meantime, check out this video:

An upcoming but little known game that has come to our attention recently is a Worms-esque, platform shooter entitled TotemHeadz, developed by Innobec Technologies.

Though we haven’t had any play time with TotemHeadz as yet, from what we’ve seen TotemHeadz deviates from the traditional Worms model by scrapping the turn-based gameplay and opting for a real-time, action-packed combat system. How this manic gameplay will handle in practise remains to be seen, but we have high hopes for what is evidently an explosive portrayal of Totemic warfare.

totem-headz

Even from early screenshots and the trailer currently available, it is clear that TotemHeadz is shaping to be a visual treat; with rich, thematic, animated backdrops and detailed character and weapon artwork immediately standing out. TotemHeadz’s impressive production values bode well for the game’s other elements too, of which the full feature list which includes 10 levels, multiple weapons, and later plans for a level editor and multiplayer.

An early trailer for the game has also been released and can be viewed below.

A price point of $2.99 or $3.99 is still being considered for TotemHeadz, which should be ready for submission within the next month or so.

The folks over at winandmac.com recently had the opportunity to sit down with a few people from Apple and have a look at a number of upcoming iPhone games and apps.  Among them are two titles we’ve recently had a look at in “upcoming” posts: THQ’s Star Wars: Trench Run and Skies of Glory from SGN.

Have a look at the gameplay videos they were able to capture of these upcoming titles.

Use the Force to overthrow the evil Galactic Empire as they attempt to destroy the small Rebel base on Yavins jungle moon.

As part of the Rebel Alliances Red Squadron you dogfight with TIE Fighters above the Death Stars surface before heading into a trench where you are inundated by cannon fire. Dodge obstacles, and stay out of Darth Vaders sights as he tries to gun you down before you have the chance to fire your proton torpedoes into a thermal exhaust port the size of a womp rat. If successful, a direct hit will cause a chain reaction that destroys the Death Star, thus saving the Rebel base from impending doom.

Skies of Glory is an aerial combat game much like F.A.S.T. but set in World War II with various terrains including mountains, deserts, and sea which are said to showcase the classic views of WWII air combat. The game will support both local Wi-Fi battles as well as online battles around the world.

Also demonstrated was the upcoming Harry Potter: Spells, a game that turns your iPhone into a magic wand and allows for real-time player-to-player duels utilizing 14 spells, each summoned by its own particular hand gesture.  The hands-on video of this one can be seen here.

Happy Halloween fellow AppTrawlers!

Aptly we are overrun with monsters today in the form of the new game by Origin8, creator of BioSub, Sentinel and Poker Buddy. MonsterKill is a tower defense game with a monster twist.  The aim of the game is to protect your gate from the rampaging hordes of classic horror types such as Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, and the mummy.  In your arsenal of weapons are a series of spells which are cast by motioning different patterns on the screen.

The spells:

  • Slice and dice them by motioning the finger left to right
  • Summon lightning by drawing a ‘Z’ on the screen
  • Reign down fireballs with a ‘V’ action
  • Freeze them with an inverted ‘V’

The graphics are lovely and the game has a well thought out and polished feel, each of the characters move very well and the premise of the game is simple and enjoyable.  The shop feature allows you to repair and upgrade your gate or wall and improve your spells.  The sound effects are fitting, funny and even a bit catchy.

There are three game modes which include:

  • Normal: Work through the levels upgrading your abilities and defences
  • Endless: Same as normal but with no level limit… it just keeps going!
  • onslaught: The player is given 20 tokens to stock up and you have to fend off 101 monsters that attack

The only niggly problem i found was that the controls can be a little un-responsive sometimes and whilst trying to do a lighting bolt they get hit by an ice block.  However this only really happened at the craziest moments when overrun by the enemy.

Overall, the game is extremely well realised and you can tell a lot of thought and love has gone into the game.  The graphics and sounds are great and the control method, despite being un-responsive at times is new to the device and genre and adds a refreshing twist.  If you are looking for a halloween related game, you can’t go wrong with this one.  The price is great at the moment so snap it up before it goes up.

We first heard of Data East’s plans to bring Cobra Command to the iPhone last month, and just got word that they plan on submitting the game to Apple this week. Originally released in 1984, Cobra Command was the first game to overlay computer generated graphics on top of Laser Disc footage to create an arcade game that was unlike anything else available at the time.

Here are some screenshots from the latest build of the game:

They also released a gameplay video. While it isn’t the greatest quality, it at least gives you an idea of what the game is going to look like in motion:

For comparison, here is a video of the original running inside of the Daphne emulator. This latest version of the game for the iPhone will have the following improvements over the game from 1984:

  • Full motion widescreen video, fully restored and presented in H.264 running at 60 frames per second.
  • Vastly superior graphics and effects to match the on-screen action. Including an all new Cockpit, guns, missiles, and sound effects.
  • Redesigned precision multi-touch controls.
  • Accelerometer-based tilt steering! You really are in command of the worlds most awesome combat machine.
  • Instantaneous seek time, providing a seamless experience where on on-screen action unfolds uninterrupted in real time.
  • Unlockable Bonuses. Including Arcade Classic, and Expert Modes.

If Cobra Command is submitted this week like they’re planning, it should be available on the App Store sometime in mid-November.

therelicLast month we posted a brief preview of Chillingo’s upcoming hack and slash RPG, The Relic. Originally described as “Gauntlet on steroids”, this latest gameplay video does a great job showing exactly what they mean by this. Here is Chillingo’s latest description of the game:

Long ago, craftsmen of legendary art conceived an artifact of immortality; an engine of life to overthrow death and usher in the rule of peace. Yet one thousand years the Quinotaur reigns and fills the holes of the earth with horrors. Ascend from the deep where he has buried you, end the tyrant and destroy the source of his power – The Relic.

Play alone or with friends the intense hack and slash game that pits you against hordes of skeletons, spiders and evil wizards. Live the story, consume potions, collect spells and complete quests through a number of levels to uncover the secret of The Relic and finally restore peace to the world. Enjoy stunning graphics, animation and music that make the world of The Relic come alive.

The Relic will be playable with up to two players via bluetooth, and if you’re on WiFi up to four players will be able to slash their way to victory.

While still under development, The Relic is looking very interesting.

Anxious gamers who can’t wait to have Eliminate in their hands have created an unstoppable juggernaut of a thread that recently topped 6,000 posts with over 160,000 views. Eliminate is in Apple’s hands, and hopefully will be approved and on the App Store soon.

In the meantime, ngmoco released another gameplay video. While it’s obviously not as good as playing the game itself, it gives you a fairly good idea of the kind of fast-paced gameplay you can expect in the world of Eliminate.

For more information on Eliminate, take a look at the ngmoco’s official Eliminate site.

Slingers is  brand new game from Banshee Soft.

You play the part of a soldier tasked with protecting your base by trying to destroy your enemies Nuclear Reactors before they do the same to you.

You start by building your base. You can build walls to protect and hide your nuclear reactors before battle commences. Once you start the fight you cannot rebuild your defences (atleast not in the earlier levels as for the later ones I am unsure).

Combat is played out as you sit in your base firing your weapon which is a sling shot that fires bombs at the enemy base (which can be seen in the distance). You need to destroy their base before they can destroy yours.  There is a river in front of you, and if you destroy boats going accross you get power ups, you also get power ups by destroying blimps that you see flyng past in the distance.

Your sling shot is pre loaded and you simply pull it back (by dragging your finger on the touch screen) and releasing it, how far you pull back the sling shot and the direction in which you pull it depends on the direction and range of your attack. Most power ups are activated automatically as your next shot however there are others that can be used as and when required.

Your mission progresses when you have destroyed the enemy base, this is done by destroying their three nuclear reactors (before they destroy yours).

Graphically the game initially exceeds what you would expect from a 59p ($0.99) app however after a few plays you notice some out of place nast graphics (looking at you enemies trying to escape the enemy base). Having said that that this type of thing does not usually affect my enjoyability, its just a little weird to see a mixture of very good and bad graphics on the same screen.

The audio is really great , a rousing soundtrack and the sounds of explosions are different depending on your ammo and suit the game brilliantly.

Game play wise there is a feeling after playing once that you might never pick it up again, indeed the first time I played it I put it down and only tried it again for review purposes. My main problem was the accuracy of the sling shot and feeling like I was not in total control, there is an initial feeling that you have to fire as many shots as possible as fast as possible. Additional play time proved very rewarding indeed. The trick behind being successfull is realised by aquiring as many power ups as you can and using them wisely.  In the throwing of normal bombs can be hit and miss but if you get a nuke its very much worth it taking the extra time to make sure you hit your target. I quickly played through a number of levels and eventually enjoyed it so much that I forgot to take more notes during play time for the review (oops).

Looks:       There is an unfortunate mix of good and bad graphics but it has little ill effect on this app.
Controls: A little difficult to master but intuitive after a few games, before long you will be very used to it.
Sound:      A great soundtrack and nce in game noises, well suited fr the game.
Overall:   This really is a slow burner however with a few slight issues I would still reccomend this game to anyone, but you need to put a little effort in the get the controls right.  At the price point its a bargain and I will be looking forward to this developers future games.

Hitchcock from Cinemek is a mobile storyboard composer. For those of you that don’t know, a storyboard is a series of panels of rough sketches outlining a scene of a movie or commercial. They are used to help plan out the shots needed before you start filming. Hitchcock is a very specialized app so most likely the average iPhone user doesn’t have a need for it. However, for any filmmakers out there take note of this app. You’re going to want to get it.

You can add pictures to your storyboard from your photo library, or directly from your camera if you have an iPhone. This is a great feature because you can begin your storyboarding while on a location scout.

Once the pictures are in your storyboard you can rearrange the individual frames, duplicate or trash them.

The panel view is where you can view your individual frames. In this mode you have the ability to label the panel by scene and shot and add text. You can also add camera movements. Hitchcock supports most of the basic camera movements, including dollying, tracking, zooming and panning. It is missing the ability to angle the shot which some film makers may need. A great feature that it does have is the ability to add an actor that may not have been there when you took the picture.

There are enough options to make the app very useful, but not so many that it feels bloated or hard to use. Hitchcock is very intuitive. Without any previous instructions I was able to pick up this app and instantly start using it. The only issue navigating that I had was occasionally while attempting to scroll the page up or down I would accidentally select a frame and end up moving it’s location in the storyboard.

Once you’re finished editing, Hitchcock allows you to email a link to yourself where you can download your storyboard as a PDF.

Another way that Hitchcock allows you to pre-visualize your film is by using the watch feature. You can set the duration of each frame and Hitchcock will play back your storyboard using the camera moves you have designated. If you have recorded audio in the panel mode, it will also play that audio back with the video .

The ability to add a predetermined length to clips and watch it back is great to help with pacing, but unfortunately the app lacks the ability to export the video. If Hitchcock had the ability to export video it would be a lot more useful.

The price for Hitchcock is on the higher end as far as iPhone apps go. But when you take into account what you can do with this app and compare it to the price of a storyboarding application on a desktop this is very cheap and worth the price.

All in all, whether you are professional or amateur film maker, having the ability to make storyboards on the go makes Hitchcock a must have app.

Screen shot 2009-10-09 at 2.38.35 PMWe’ve been lucky enough to be able to get out hands on a preview copy of EA’s Command & Conquer Red Alert. While I admit it’s been at least ten years since I played the PC version of the game, the look and feel seems to be remarkably intact, but most importantly the controls in the game work surprisingly well.

Red Alert is a prequel to the original Command & Conquer and takes place sometime during the 1950’s in a parallel universe following Albert Einstein’s creation and activation of a time machine. Einstein erases Hitler’s existence, but without Nazi Germany providing resistance and weakening the Soviet Union, Stalin’s armies grow increasingly powerful and he is intent on taking over all of Europe and Asia. As a fan of alternate history fiction, the Red Alert universe has always really appealed to me.

7320_152310502345_46940027345_2617946_5689885_n

The iPhone version of the game is trimmed down from the original, but with so few solid real-time strategy games on the platform, Red Alert still clearly stands out from the competition. The version of the game I’ve been playing comes with an objective-based campaign for both factions as well as a skirmish mode. But even though the game has been compacted to the small screen, all of the features such as base building and unit micromanagement still are in game.

The screen is framed with all kinds of interface elements, and while seeming slightly cluttered, everything works well enough and I never felt like the controls were getting in the way of what I wanted to do in the game. The battlefield can be zoomed using standard pinching gestures, and to change your field of view you can either swipe your finger around the screen or touch the mini map in the top right corner.

7320_152310527345_46940027345_2617950_7415042_nLining the right side of the screen are all the buttons and menus for building your base as well as training units. Just like the PC version, units can be queued up to train multiples at once. Placing a new building in your base is as simple as tapping it from the “build” menu, at which point a grid appears on top of the terrain and your building can be placed with familiar green and red highlighting indicating valid placement.

Once you’ve got your army built, you can organize units in to three squads assigned to the three buttons on the left hand side of the screen. To select units, you can either tap them to select individual units, or by tapping a button on the bottom left corner of the screen you can drag a selection box around units on the battlefield. From there, another button on the bottom of the screen allows you to assign your current selection of units to one of the three buttons on the left side of the screen.

While this may all sound slightly convoluted and confusing, the initial campaign missions walk you through all of the controls and once you get used to them you will be commanding your forces almost as effectively as you would be using a keyboard and mouse.

Here is a brief video of me (losing) one of the Soviet missions, and if you’re as nostalgic as I am about this game series, the title music alone will bring back memories–

[ Full HD version | Low Bandwidth version ]

Overall, Command & Conquer Red Alert in one of the more impressive iPhone games I’ve played lately. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any kind of multiplayer included with this release which really would have pushed Red Alert over the line in to the “totally awesome” category. According to EA, the game will be available on October 23rd.

3D Tunnel may have been better suited with a catchier name and a background premise.  For example, calling the app “Wormhole” and having the spaceship trapped in a wormhole trying to find the way out work be easier to market (unless there is already another app named Wormhole).

Game play is pretty simple.  You tilt the device to the right or left or up or down in order to move the spaceship in that direction.  If you touch the sides of the tunnel, you explode and thus lose the game.  There are options to adjust the sensitivity of tilting the device as well as flipping the x-axis and sound.

The game is a good idea and very simple to use.  There are one or two improvements that could be made to make it better.

First, the spaceship design looks simplistic and amateur.  This conflicts with the tunnel efffect which looks kind of cool.  This is where a good graphic designer would come in handy.

Second, when I play the game I’m usually not holding it parallel to my face.  I’m holding it downwards at an angle, and although i can flip the axis, it still was a little difficult to handle the controls (even with the sensitivity setting in the options menu set to low).

The game is a little pricey for what it offers.  I would pay $.99 for this one, but not $2.99.  I’d wait for a decrease in price before purchase.

Quick Take

Value: Decent
Would I Buy Again: Possibly, if the cost was $.99.
Learning Curve: Low.
Who Is It For: Flight simulator fans.
What I Like: The game itself.  The tunnel graphics.
What I Don’t: The spaceship design.  The inability to set a custom angle to play.  The price.

Final Statement: Would be worth it at a lower price.

We normally don’t get too excited over teaser trailers, but Italian software house KF lab’s video for their upcoming game A Skeleton Story is really quite engrossing. The game is centered around a main character named Will Musil, a detective:

Will plays in a world of the dead and completely alone. He jumps from buildings to buildings all over town trying to kill the thugs who work for the Old Lady (The Death) and avoiding the various obstacles.

The game is said to be structured as part side scrolling platformer and part comicbook with a heavy emphasis on the art and storyline.

According to iSpazio, the game will be delivered in 4 episodes, with the first due in November.
