In today’s contemporary economy it is crucial for project heads to make sure everyone is on the same page.  Given how many contemporary projects are cobbled together from various sources these days it can be difficult to organize a process through texts, phone calls, and periodic emails, and then relaying these new developments to others involved.  While there is a lot of collaborative software available, most of it requires a desktop, and is not nearly as flexible as is needed these days.  As a small business coordinating with many agents in the field it was imperative for us to find a technological solution to these issues.  When we discovered Trello it was the end of all our worries.

Trello organizes itself through a series of ‘boards’, there is no limit on boards (that we have found anyways), and they essentially can be used to separate projects.  Once a board has been created, it again opens to a blank workspace where the user can begin to create the tasks which a project requires.  This is the point at which Trello becomes the most useful to the user.  When creating a card the user can insert all the relevant data in a myriad of forms.  There is room for notes, of course, but there are also ways of adding due dates, checklists, color coded ads, polls, and even attach and exchange files.  Once a card is created to a users liking, you can begin to invite other Trello users to participate in that card, and to a degree that board.  Although, users will only see the cards on a board they have been granted (and accepted) permission to see.

Trello updates in real time and keeps an archive of completed tasks in case you wish to review past information on a project.  As the logistics head of a Buffalo, NY dumpster rental company we use Trello to keep real time tabs on our dumpster locations, current billing cycles, and to help monitor deadlines for the upcoming construction of a recycling center.  The ease of use of the app has proven particularly helpful to our agents in the field.  Simplistic, private, and free, there is little more you demand of an app providing the services you need.  As such it is easy to rate the Trello app very highly.

AppTrawler has been given the exclusive preview of upcoming quiz app Quizicards. A slick and good looking quiz app that comes with 1000 questions, however what really interested us is the ability to create and share quizzes for FREE.  The developers have shown us a huge list of quizzes already online for you to download including a huge range of topics including, Harry Potter, Superheroes, Spanish Words, Wines of the World and even Key stage 2 Science.

Developer notes:

main_screen480

Quizicards is an iphone application which turns the room into a quiz show. The application has two sides, the quizmaster and the contestant; the quizmaster can ask various questions to the audience turning any dinner party, gathering or bored moment into a fun packed quiz.  The app has loads of questions split into ‘general knowledge’ ‘categories’ and specialist subjects’ which means the game type can vary.  They can either choose ‘individuals’ or ‘multiple’ contestants which also changes the game type.

card-multiple480-3

How it works
On load, the user will choose the game type and the amount of players and then the quizmaster will will show the user a pack of quiz cards with the questions and answers on. There will also be a timer for each question.  quizmaster will change cards by running their left or right thumb over the side of the screen (as if putting a card to the back of the pack). When a round is over the app tots up the players score and adds it to a table.  This repeats for the various contestants until the 1, 3, 5 rounds have been exhausted.

6-players

The contestant
If there are multiple iphone users playing the game they can also press the ‘contestant’ option which allows the users to choose a sound effect from various choices which will be assigned to their ‘answer button’.  The user can tap the screen to answer a question.

Create your own quizzes
Users can create their own quizzes, upload them to the site and download other peoples quizzes.

download-quizzes480-2

EARN $0.50 for each quiz uploaded (Terms & Conditions Apply)

Could this app make all the other quiz apps redundant? AppTrawler received a development build and the app looks easy to use and has a stack of options which might take time to get used to but it nice to be able to create a quiz to your own specifications.  If the quiz community get behind the app then we foresee this having a permanent position on our iphones.

The app has now been submitted to the App Store for review so we should have another update for you when its out.

In the meantime, check out this video:

Social branding guru Vitrue has worked closely with Apple to develop a hub for the App Store on social networking behemoth Facebook.

On the developer’s blog, Vitrue says it “worked with the iTunes team at Apple to provide strategic guidance, creative design, solution development and account management.”

The fan page, which already boasts over 80,000 fans, has tabs for featured apps, games, a search widget, and a discussion forum. Users can boot up iTunes by clicking on the featured apps or share the love for their favourite games on their Facebook wall.

More features are promised soon, which Vitrue says will “help fans sort through the virtual mountain of apps and easily discover what their friends like.”

This functionality was previously exclusive to Mplayit and its iPhone Arcade on Facebook.

And while you’re on Facebook, why not become a fan of Pocket Gamer?

This is a great bit of news… The latest update to the paypal iphone app will now include a ‘Bump to Pay’ feature.

For those who don’t know ‘Bump’ allowed you to swap photos, contact info and more just by putting two phones next to each other.  Bump was also the 1 billionth app downloaded (downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, age 13, of Weston USA)

But I digress… Now paypal app users will be able to add the amount to pay into there iphone and bump the person who they owe.  The funds are transferred and viola!

Could this be the end of money, credit cards and cheques… or is it just another gimmic which will die a death…

Whether you’re a beginning student or have been playing since you were 3, Nota is sure to be an asset for any musician. Created by Melvin Rivera, Nota is an comprehensive resource for fundamental music theory. Nota provides the basic user with a 4 octave piano that displays the key played with its concurrent note on a staff. There is also a Notes Quiz that tests you on identifying notes on a staff. The easy level consists of 34 notes, while the Advanced level contains 82 notes along with sharps and flats. I find this Quiz to be a perfect venue to work on note recognition/sight reading and I hope there are plans to expand the quiz to include chords, which would only make a good thing better. For the more advanced user, Nota comes stocked with a conclusive Reference Library with terms and definitions, including the Circle of Fifths. Flip to landscape mode and you easily can search through the library by symbol. But what really makes Nota great is its extensive Scales and Chords Browsers. With Nota, you can look up practically any chord or scale and it will display the notes and keys and play it so you can hear what it sounds like. The latest edition also includes Solfège mode, to have notes shown in their solfège syllables. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it’s how the other part of the world refers to notes, think “Doe, a deer, a female deer; ray, a drop of golden sun…”

Nota is straightforward and easy to navigate. It is also beautifully designed and the piano sounds are full and clear. You can also try it out for yourself with the free Nota Lite. Nota Lite does not have the Scales and Chords Browsers, Quiz or Reference Library but does comes with the 4 octave piano that displays the notes on the scale as well as the full screen piano in Landscape mode.

If you’re coming in expecting to learn how to play the piano, you’ll probably be better off looking for an instructor or music academy. However, if you’re looking for a fantastic music reference guide with added functions, at $4.99, Nota is definitely worth looking into.

This 3rd Party App is available at the Apple iTunes AppStore. Browse the full list of all AppStore apps filed under the AppStore category.

With Halloween approaching, now would be a good time to review an app or two whose sole purpose is to scare the crap out of people.  iPossessed is one of those apps.

The concept behind iPossessed is that you have an iPhone or iPod Touch that is possessed by the Devil.  It makes scary noises and a blood-red pentagram appears on the screen once the program is started.  If you own an iPhone, the device vibrates uncontrollably.

To use the app effectively, you leave your iPhone on a table with friends or hand it to a friend.  You can set a timer to start the program after a set number of seconds.  Through the same options, you can choose to use the pentagram background or turn on or off certain sounds.  Then you leave the vicinity and let the fun begin.

I have one or two problems with the app.  There should be more background options and more sounds that come with it.  Perhaps the developers can add those in a future release.  Why not have a background that is identical to the iPhone or iPod Touch background but uses animation to drip blood?  Also, you can’t deactivate the image and sounds once they begin without stopping the application.

If you’re a practical joker, then this app is virtually a must-have.  It’s cheaper and more reusable than a whoopee cushion.

Quick Take

Value: Medium

Would I Buy Again: Quite possibly

Learning Curve: Low

Who Is It For: Practical jokers.

What I Like: Scary sound effects and image.

What I Don’t: Lack of image and sound choices. Can’t stop sounds without stopping app.

Final Statement: Good for practical jokers.

iCanSee is both a useful and functional application that allows you to magnify any image or text you would like to see larger. By using the iPhone’s built-in camera, you can enlarge images up to four times. It’s a great application for those who have a hard time seeing things up close, but is only truly useful with the iPhone 3GS.

Once opened, the app automatically uses the iPhone’s camera to display the image in a virtual magnifying glass. You start off with the magnification slider at the bottom of the screen. Sliding all the way to the right will utilize full magnification up to four times. Alternatively, you can tap the plus sign to magnify in increments. You can view your images using the virtual magnifying glass, or you can choose the full screen option and utilize the entire iPhone screen.

At first, iCanSee seems like just another fun novelty app, but after using it for a while, you’ll begin to discover how useful it can be for some people. The app simply does what it says it does. It will make whatever is in the iPhone’s camera view larger. Just like a real magnifying glass, there is a certain distance from the image that is ideal. Too far away and the magnification doesn’t do much.

If you’re too close to the image, it appears blurry. Most of the time, the app worked well and I would feel confident that it would help me see small print if I had a vision problem. The app is only really useful if you’ve forgotten your reading glasses, or if you usually have difficulty seeing small images or text. It is also only useful if you have the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3G does not have autofocus like the 3GS does, so it will not display images as clearly.

Do not expect this app to display images in crystal clarity when magnified up to four times. The image does get blurry. However, it’s just clear enough that the app is definitely a functional piece of equipment. The only issue I see is the lack of user customization. It would be nice to have the option to change the magnifying glass style or colors to make it your own. Other than that, the app works well. If you are someone with vision problems, or an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast, then this app is definitely for you. Otherwise, I don’t foresee many users excited for this one.

There are so many photography apps out there that it can become quite a task to find which one is right for you. Best Camera does a great job of providing a simplified user interface that makes photo editing fast and easy. You can share your edited photos in numerous ways, including Facebook and Twitter. It’s a solid application that is more geared toward the amateur photographer.

You can take a new picture or load one from your photo library to begin. Once the picture is loaded, you can begin editing. There are fourteen different effects to choose from, each one offering a unique look to your photos. These effects include common items such as lighten, darken and vignette. There are also some interesting filters such as candy, jewel and Paris. All you have to do is tap on a single button to add that effect. You can see the result before confirming the effect for a permanent change.

The fourteen effects can be added as single filters, or they can be stacked to have multiple filters applied at one time. This is a unique approach to creating custom effects. You can add as many filters as you want at the same time and each one can be individually removed if necessary.

Sharing your creations is simple as well. You can create an account at “thebestcamera.com” and post photos on their site, post to Facebook, add to Twitter, email or save them to your camera roll. Setting these accounts up beforehand really makes sharing fast and easy.

One of the more unique features of Best Camera is the community section. Tapping on the globe brings up a grid of photos submitted by other users. If you create an account with “thebestcamera.com” you can rate the photos and find out which filters that person used to create the effect. This may be the one feature that makes Best Camera a recommended purchase. Other than this community feature, this application really has nothing new to offer the world of photography. The filters are found in almost ever other photo-editing app in the app store. Most other apps utilize sliders that allow the user to set exactly how much of a particular filter they’d like to apply. You can’t do that with this application. Each effect application is an all or nothing deal. Best Camera also includes a cropping tool, but you can’t adjust what is actually cropped. It automatically applies the crop, which is really a useless feature.

This application is great for the amateur photographer who wants a quick way to add effects to their photos and share them easily. More advanced users will quickly become frustrated with its lack of features and customization. However, the community feature may be appealing to both types. There are other photo apps out there that I like better, so I won’t be keeping this one on my device for long. But, for the first time user who needs a quick photo editor, I recommend checking this one out.

In Germany, a research team demonstrated an iPhone application that could control a mini-van. This app isn’t like the other car-controling apps before it; it doesn’t just unlock and lock your doors, you can do much more than pop your trunk and set the alarm off with it, and starting the engine isn’t even the main feature.

iDrive, by developer Appirion, can steer, accelerate and stop, and everything else it takes to actually drive a car. The iPhone accelerometer steers the vehicle, and the break and gas pedals are controlled with two touch buttons.

This has been done before with the PSP, three years ago actually, but it’s still pretty admirable to see it done on the iPhone. The PSP powered a Honda Civic through a Wi-Fi connection in the same way, which is pretty pointless.

As you can see, the mini-van is heavily wired for remote control and this app was for demonstration purposes only so don’t look for it in the App Store. But the iDrive shows potential. It could feasibly be used, James Bond style, to drive a car.

Check out the demo here.

Today, Directed Electronics released an iPhone app that replaces your keys and allows you to remote start your car with an iPhone or iPod Touch.

The app is called Viper SmartStart, and expounds on the recently released app from Zipcar. Zipcar’s app allows Zipcar vehicle renters to lock and unlock their borrowed car doors. Viper SmartStart does much more than just lock and unlock the doors, and it is programmed to work with your car, not just a Zipcar rental. The app is free, but it requires the Viper SmartStart system to be installed in your car and that will run you about 0 bucks, 0 if you have a Viper remote start system pre-installed. The system comes with one year of service, which is normally thirty bucks a year.

The app replaces the need for a keychain and allows you to open the trunk, lock and unlock your doors, set off the alarm, and best of all: start the engine. From anywhere your iPhone has signal, you can turn on your vehicle with a simple tap on your touch screen. With Wi-Fi, you can use your iPod Touch to control your car.

The app can control multiple cars and tracks your activity with alerts. The timing of this app couldn’t be better. As winter approaches, warming up the car from bed should be a wonderful luxury.

You can see a demo of the new app below:

Google wave can be accessed from the Safari browser on your iPhone or iPod touch, as a web based application. To try it, you obviously would need to have a Google Wave account, and an iPhone or iPod touch. Open Safari, type in wave.google.com which will show you an error message, stating your browser is not supported, with a message saying “Sorry, it looks like you’re using a browser that isn’t supported during the preview of Google Wave.” On the bottom of the page there is a link that reads “If you want to continue at your own peril, go ahead”. The site actually contains the meta tag for being capable of working in the apple Mobile device (apple-mobile-web-app-capable) although lack of the Flash player on the iPhone could be the main reason why Wave not openly promoted to Apple devices. Just tap the go ahead link which will take you to the mobile version of Google Wave. Even though this page is not perfectly optimized for the iPhone browser and things run slowly, but it works.

The iPhone version lets you search waves, create a new wave, and see your list of waves. Tap to switch between single view or avatar view. You can also view and manage your Google Wave contacts from here. If you are watching a wave on your iPhone, the webapp follows the typing in real time pretty nicely. Again, this isn’t officially supported and there isn’t too much functionality such as attachments, but it works so it is a great alternative for when you are on the go.

Fellow wordsmiths may be happy to know that developer Mobile Pie has today announced Oh, My Word! 2 is on the way to the iPhone

Fans of the iPhone’s, hangman-esque puzzler might also be delighted to know that this incarnation includes Plus+ Network capabilities to go alongside the new survival and time attack modes.

The Plus+ Network is essentially a free social service that enables players, “to create a persistent profile, challenge others, fight for leaderboard glory, participate in game events and discover new games”, the press release states.

According to Mobile Pie’s website, the game will also integrate with Twitter and Facebook. We assume this will be to publish scores and create friendships with other players, but it may go deeper.

Will Luton, Mobile Pie’s Creative Producer says, “Oh, My Word! 2 has been an absolute labour of love for us, we’ve enjoyed every minute of creating and playing this sequel and having the Plus+ Network is a real honour”. Will we feel the love? Only time will tell.

Oh, My Word! 2 will set you back a whole 59p and should spring up on the App Store in November.

Hitchcock from Cinemek is a mobile storyboard composer. For those of you that don’t know, a storyboard is a series of panels of rough sketches outlining a scene of a movie or commercial. They are used to help plan out the shots needed before you start filming. Hitchcock is a very specialized app so most likely the average iPhone user doesn’t have a need for it. However, for any filmmakers out there take note of this app. You’re going to want to get it.

You can add pictures to your storyboard from your photo library, or directly from your camera if you have an iPhone. This is a great feature because you can begin your storyboarding while on a location scout.

Once the pictures are in your storyboard you can rearrange the individual frames, duplicate or trash them.

The panel view is where you can view your individual frames. In this mode you have the ability to label the panel by scene and shot and add text. You can also add camera movements. Hitchcock supports most of the basic camera movements, including dollying, tracking, zooming and panning. It is missing the ability to angle the shot which some film makers may need. A great feature that it does have is the ability to add an actor that may not have been there when you took the picture.

There are enough options to make the app very useful, but not so many that it feels bloated or hard to use. Hitchcock is very intuitive. Without any previous instructions I was able to pick up this app and instantly start using it. The only issue navigating that I had was occasionally while attempting to scroll the page up or down I would accidentally select a frame and end up moving it’s location in the storyboard.

Once you’re finished editing, Hitchcock allows you to email a link to yourself where you can download your storyboard as a PDF.

Another way that Hitchcock allows you to pre-visualize your film is by using the watch feature. You can set the duration of each frame and Hitchcock will play back your storyboard using the camera moves you have designated. If you have recorded audio in the panel mode, it will also play that audio back with the video .

The ability to add a predetermined length to clips and watch it back is great to help with pacing, but unfortunately the app lacks the ability to export the video. If Hitchcock had the ability to export video it would be a lot more useful.

The price for Hitchcock is on the higher end as far as iPhone apps go. But when you take into account what you can do with this app and compare it to the price of a storyboarding application on a desktop this is very cheap and worth the price.

All in all, whether you are professional or amateur film maker, having the ability to make storyboards on the go makes Hitchcock a must have app.

Studio Radiolaris has dropped the price of their musical shooter Radio Flare [App Store] to free for this weekend only (from .99). The game is a solid side scrolling shooter for the iPhone with a musical component to it that we enjoyed when it first came out. The developers have since added a number of new features and levels to the game since its original release and is certainly worth downloading for free.

The reason for the price drop is in celebration of the announcement of their follow-up title Radio Flare Redux. This time, Studio Radiolaris is teaming up with Chillingo as a publisher for their new title. Radio Flare Redux is said to bring a whole new experience with a fresh new style.

“It will be great to have multiple licensed music tracks in Radio Flare Redux. This way each level will be a unique experience.” says Fares Kayali, Sound Designer at studio radiolaris. Adds Martin Pichlmair, Lead Designer for Radio Flare Redux, “Everything is driven by rhythm and beat – from the enemies’ paths to their actions and even the background graphics!”

The following teaser video has been released:

Redux is due for release in “Winter 2009”.
